This book is surprising. I love the way in which it was constructed...the short story aspect of this novel really opened up different view points on the main character of Olive Kitteridge. I love how realistic the themes are - those of marriage, parenting, tragedy, suicide, illness and natural death are all dealt with through endurance. Life happens. Things go WRONG. Life can be painful and yet we wake up everyday, until one day we don't...but we should never let ourselves get to the point where we don't WANT to wake up! I read this book because I have been trying to open myself up to new authors and in doing so I have read a few of the more recent Pulitzer Prize Winners in Fiction. This novel won in 2009. It being so recently written, I was struck by how many references to current events were included. This is very different from the older classics I usually read and I found it gave me a different sort of connection to the book and its characters. It could have been about my own grandparents...even though God, I hope that's not how they feel!

My third Terry Pratchett book, and at least the 10th time I've laughed out loud on public transportation reading one of them. I didn't like this one as much as Wyrd Sisters, unfortunately... not enough Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg. Alas.
