Really liked this one. A great critique on the sad state of Evangelical Christianity and the Arts in our day. Fortunately there are strong movements out there to counteract this trend, but it can still be seen today. Just visit your local Christian bookstore sometime.

My uncle recommended this book to me, and I enjoyed it so much I had to see the movie, too. I learned quite a bit about the Japanese culture and history while enjoying a well-written story with a plot that keeps you wanting to learn what happens to her next.

This book is defined by the fact that it was serialized in the newspaper, so each dollop (it's hardly a chapter) matches the attention span of a person riding the bus to work in the morning. Smith genuinely likes his characters, and by the end, so did I.

Very entertaining. I, as usual, could not guess any of the solutions. Typical Agatha Christie. :)

An interesting exploration of the language, culture, food, traditions, politics and history of one of the most unique groups in the entire world. Kurlansky certainly adopts a rather unorthodox approach, throwing in recipes in the middle of long expositions on Basque history and tradition. The book is chock full of wonderful little facts but could have done with a little pruning - I found myself skipping through yet another random recipe that was chucked in the middle of a passage to get on with the narrative. I actually read most of the book while at home, lying in bed, down with the flu. A rather odd choice of book for such an occasion, but it had the convenience of lying on the shelf right next to my pillow.

This collection of short stories, written between the late fifties and early seventies, has held up quite well. For the most part, they are set in the far distant future and explore questions of alien civilizations and space travel. Only two stories, written in 1959 and 1969 and taking place in 1989 and 2003 respectively contain technology that we now know was not in existence at those times. However, it is rather easy to suspend disbelief and treat the stories as if they take place in a future not too distant from now. I did not dislike any of the tales in this collection, but I did not absolutely LOVE any of them either. They were all decent, but now, after I’ve finished, I find it rather difficult to remember them individually. Overall, not a waste of time, but not something I would recommend to anyone who isn’t a fan of science fiction in general and Robert Silverberg in particular.

I couldn't even get through the Eat part of this book. This is also coming from a person who no matter what always finishes a book. That being said I passed this book along and watched the movie instead.
