Pat Barker is a terrific story teller and does a great job building characters and scenes. The dialogue is punchy and the plot moves at a nice clip, gripping. Her books seem to expose children's dark underside, and by inverting innocence and guilt pose fascinating moral questions. Like peeling away layers from an onion, Barker goes deep within the human experience, revealing meanings and emotions that, I think, are relevant to most people.

I think this novel may fall short of people's expectations, simply because so many people were enchanted with The Time Traveler's Wife, and this book isn't nearly as gripping. Having said that, there were so many things I loved about it. For one thing, it takes place in and around a Victorian cemetery, and as someone who volunteers at tours and events in a Victorian cemetery, I can tell that she researched. The tour guides in her book were right about things like Egyptian imagery in those monuments. I also give her credit for originality; so many stories are just re-tellings of other stories, and this one went out on a limb. I also love ghosts, and the fact that one of the main characters has a job full-time writing crossword puzzles. It's always fascinated me, to think about people who are able to do that for a living.

It was a long haul, interrupted by many other books and magazines, but I finally got through this one. Oddly, I liked the active part of the plot, so you'd think I would have powered through to find out how it ended. Possibly it was all the conversations about politics, religion, agriculture, etc that made me keep postponing it.

the female protaganist is annoying. She is a wimp. She is in love with a man who cannot accept her for who she is and ignors someone who shares her talents (witch) and accepts her for who she is. However, the ending promises some changes in her life as she ends up defying her overbearing,controlling,superstitious mother, selfish sister and ends up in the arms of someone who likes her just as she is. promising ending.

A triumph. Junot fully captured the north jersey Caribbean immigrant experience. There is so much I could relate to in the book that I guess there was no way I would not have liked it. The sci and geek allusions were awesome and the book is one of the most laugh out loud funny books I have ever read. It felt like an old friend.
