read immediately following the choice and i liked this one as well. again, a daily dose of reality, a little more mystery than his others, but NOT a mystery novel, maybe malicious intent sounds better? but it was good.

I've apparently been reading too much Colin Dexter as I kept waiting for Morse to pop up in this novel and liven things up! Not a bad book, but thank goodness it's as short as it is - I'm not sure I could have taken much more of the narrator. The math is pretty interesting - even for someone who hates math. Wish it had more Oxford flavour, but overall not an unappealing read.

A very good read but definitely not for the faint hearted. The subject matter is harrowing and leaves a nasty taste in your mouth. I found it impossible to put down even though some parts left me feeling very uncomfortable. Jack Caffery is an engaging and tortured central character, far from perfect which makes him seem very human. This book has number of issues running at the same time and the author blends them together seamlessly. The twist and turns in the plot are exceptional. I would certainly recommend reading Birdman first as it gives you the background on Jack, which will help you understand his issues in this book.

It's a damn interesting, compelling, educational and thought-provoking book. Anyone who wants to understand the black continent, its politics, history, why is it in the state its in right now and more, should read it. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed, hey - you won't be even able to put it down once you start reading it.

This falls into the dystopic nightmare category of books...But Ishiguro's quiet, controlled narrative voice sustains you throughout its scenes of devastation. I couldn't put it down and immediately started re-reading it after I turned its last page...And then picked up _The Remains of the Day_ to continue the Ishiguro-lovefest. Read this book!!! (I think Ji-Hyae has my copy in Ann Arbor, so y'all in AA can borrow it from her...)

While I wasn't exactly blown away by this comic, it was surprising to see how much similarity there was between a 1960s manga and the typical comic strips for boys in British comics that I grew up with. Firstly there is the hero's name - Speed Racer - which is improbably cool to a child and tells you everything you need to know about him. Then there's the fact that he's a teenager - too young, in fact, to be a professional racing driver, let alone a world class one. Finally, there are his fantastic adventures, the kind of thing you would expect of super hero comics rather than a sports-based strip - voodoo zombies, lost mythical civilisations, secret agents and saboteurs. The history of Speed Racer's publication, at least what one can find on Wikipedia, is so convoluted that I don't know whether this is a 1980s reprint translated into English or an American version inspired by the original Japanese classic. The innocent Boys' Own quality of the storyline suggests the former, while the 80s mullet hairstyles, the leading character's romance and the technology portrayed could place it later. Either way, it's clearly a pure kids comic and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but a comics enthusiast - who might find more than I could in its style and artwork - or someone who read it as a child and wants to wallow in nostalgia.

This is nicely illustrated and started out really good, with an interesting discussion on language (ur-language, the separation of a thing and its name, etc.) but then spiraled into the dark, pointless crisis of the main character on his quest for meaning. Boo hoo.
