I'm told that Kipling is out of fashion these days, but he was, and is, something else. Standing for and writing about a bygone age, his heart was always with the working class English foot soldiers of the Raj, and this short story allows two of them to follow an odd path to a near obscure glory in the wilds of Afghanistan. This was made into a cracking film with Sean Connery and Michael Caine, which filled in a lot of the colour that this book misses out in its brevity. The story is a good one though, and powers along to its inevitable conclusion as the two soldiers become undone by ego and dreams of Empire. Coming to think of it, maybe Kipling was telling another story here by analogy, but I just enjoyed the tale told at face value.

Took a few years, but finally finished along with the Appendices. In the end, the authors note that this is not a new approach, but more of a review of what has been down in the modern marketplace and how to systematically plan and prepare for new 'blue oceans'.

Fast read about a girl in Philadelphia during the centennial. It was really interesting to see how different the city was at that time.

This is an amazing novel (most of DuMaurier's novels are good) about murder, love and obsession. It's also a remarkable study in character and identity since the title character is dead when the novel begins and the narrator has no name. Definately a must-read.

Interesting enough read, over my head though. Walked away with a vague sense of * need to pay attention to unintended consequences, tendency for policies and plans (eg. to achieve desegregation) to fail * complex behaviours, unpredictability emerging even in simple systems * something about general equilibrium theory being wrong * parallel between biology and economics (?) * ...particularly striking similarity between distribution of extinction sizes/frequencies in species and firms * comparison between exogenous and endogenous models accounting for such distributions, how in biological context both seem to work, but latter makes sense for economic * need to read a bit of Hayek References to LTCM and power law distributions seem to be echoed in Black Swan. Writing seems a bit tiresome, repetitive, plodding... yet somehow unclear. I dunno, maybe I was just tired

** spoiler alert ** I'm learning more and more from this book that is yet to be stated- but I will say it's pretty boring inbetween murders.

My favorite quote about this book comes from one of my toughest customers, a 7th grade girl, who told me "This is the only book I have ever read that I liked." The look in her eyes when she said that was a little scary, like if I argued with her at all about its value she might punch me. Luckily, I made some sort of agreeable sound, so it worked out. My students each year embrace this book as if it came out of their neighborhood, and is about their own friends. Thanks, Ponyboy; stay gold.

This book, as it took me about half of it to finally grasp the concept, is a history of pretty much how the US came to be, from the pilgrims and the Mayflower and then right down to the space age. For me the book for pretty slow starting. The chapters about the founding fathers of America was pretty tough because a lot of the writing relied upon prior knowledge of the subject, of which I have very little, but past that, this book is typical Bryson. Funny whilst unbelievably informing this book is the perfect holiday read. Whilst still writing in a clever yet concise way, the facts of it all is brilliant. So many little facts that I will probably always remember and bore people with (such as the word ‘coke’ being the second most recognised international word, ahead of ‘ok’.) I was led to read this book my goal to read all of Bryson’s books, but it is truly entertaining. It’s the perfect book to dip in and out of, but if you’re like me, it works well as a straight through book. Although I wouldn’t count it as one of my favourites of his, that honour being reserved for such classics as Notes From A Small Island, I did really enjoy this and heartily recommend it with a glass of peach ice tea. (I was away and Greece and didn’t see it quite fitting for tea and a good book….)
