Yes, I am a closet Jane Austen fan. Especially if it has to do with Mr. Darcy. Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy. If you, too, are slightly obsessed, this is a great book. Easy to read and entertaining. Not earth shattering, and it doesn't change lives, but a fun break.

This is still probably the best book I've read about the struggle against nature and the elements. Reading it makes me want to shiver.

NY Detective Michael Bennett is a very sympathetic character. Not only is he an excellent homicide detective, but the recently widowed and harried father of 10 (five of which are adopted.) Very fast-paced action as he chases the twisted killer through the streets and upscale places of the city.

I am not rich enough in words to express my delight in this book. I was guided by another member of GR to this treasure and cannot begin to tell her how much I appreciate her suggestion that I read this. The book is so rich in characters and plot twists that it is not possible to adequately summarize it. However, I will say that the writing is beautiful and the story mesmerizing. The descriptions of this wonderfully created world are enough on their own to make reading this worthwhile. Add in characters for whom the reader quickly begins to care and you have the recipe for a page turner. The heroes are appropriately flawed and the villains are black-hearted fools. What more can the high fantasy reader ask? The plot holds frequent reminders of the Wars of the Roses as the struggle between the Starks and the Lannisters (sound familiar?) continues on its aeons long bloody course. There is also a taste of "Dune" in the relationships between the generations. The device Martin uses to keep the story going and the numerous threads all straight is to cut like a novelistic D.W. Griffith from person to person, revealing the events through separate sets of eyes. It is a startlingly effective technique. The final scene of the book is stunning. Although the principle element had been foreshadowed well before hand, the converging of the various plot lines makes it streak like a meteor into the mind. I am almost breathless, having just finished reading this the first book of a series (whose length is not yet determined). I shall read another sort of book to freshen my mental palate before I burrow into "A Clash of Kings". It is going to be hard to set this continuing story and its vivid characters to the back of my consciousness, even for a little while.

I will do almost anything Rick Steves tells me to. However, this guidebook was not really that exciting. His maps are pretty crappy and he only recommends things he likes- he doesn't let you know what else there is to see. Plus, he wrote four pages about Oslo's national gallery, which I thought was really boring. Whatever!

I really wanted to like this book. I enjoyed the "Magicians" alot and was looking foward to this installment, but this book left me longing for the book it could have been. I enjoy Grossman's style. I like the sarcastic wit and the fact that his "heroes" are flawed. When I finished the book I was underwhelmed. At first I couldn't figure why. The book had a basic plot - find the keys and save magic; and there was action; however, I kept trying to figure out what the point was. I like a challenge and I don't need my stories to be tied up with a neat little bow, but this book lacked meaning. Perhaps this was the point. Quentin's constant restlessness and need for something more is a good enough lesson, but there was so much emphasis on his perspective and Julia's back story that I think the author missed great opportunities to dive deeper into the overall story. I kept thinking wait - I want to know more about Eleanor and the deal with Outer Island, or how Penny became one of the Neitherland protectors, or why the gods have returned and why they want to remove magic, or why the goddess decided to finally show up in the underworld. In this sense there was almost too much going on that Grossman couldn't possibly develop all of the subplots; however, it left me feeling like I was watching tv and changing channels every 2 minutes. I wanted to know how everyone and everything was being impacted by what was happening, not just Quentin's view. I was also disappointed with the themes of Julia having to use sex as currency and the rape experience. I'm not easily offended. This just felt lazy to me, put in more for shock value then plot enhancement. The ending was really hard to swallow. Poppy's and Josh's decision to stay in Fillory without any real explanation - other than "with you and Julia gone, there's two empty seats" didn't make sense considering all along they indicated their preference for Earth. And Quentin's kick ass and take names approach all through the book until the end didn't jive either. Why, at the end, did he just accept his fate, when all along he fought for what he wanted? I will likely read the next installment just to see if Grossman brings it all together. I hope this book isn't a reflection of what's to come.

Dod-a-chok. This book introduces more weirdness to the Dark Tower series and is instrumental in setting the tone for the remainder of the series. If by the end of this book you're not interested, you might want to consider stopping reading while you still can.

It was the best spy series i had ever read.
For a "kids book" these are really well written and wonderfully imaginative. I am addicted...

Geleceğini hiç görmedim. Belki birazcık. Ancak Thalia'nın kız kardeşi olduğunu bulmak gerçekten şaşırtıcıydı.
