Chock-a-block full of gung-ho jingoism, narrow minded fascist pipe dreams, and casual descriptions of institutional dehumanization as well as violence...basically everything you would expect from a book written in the perspective of a futuristic jarhead. I have never read a book in which I agreed with so little, but loved so much.

i didn't like it as much as Lullaby, but it was still cool in that plahniuk bizzaro sort of way. it's sort of like a mixture of the Jonestown massacre and The Who's 'Tommy', all intertwined with little household tips for getting stains out of things and such. the pages are numbered backward, which i think all books should do because then you always know how many pages you have left!

This book was good, though I must admit that I prefer Collins' The Woman in White. Some memorable characters in The Moonstone are Betteridge, with his sense of humor and fascination with sleuthing, and the great Sergeant Cuff ... a similar character to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. I found Cuff to be an enjoyable surprise in the book. Some stretches of the book were rather slow, but for the most part, this is an amusing read.

The title and lurid cover art are both pretty misleading, since the book is mostly about the media hype and hysteria surrounding "Satanism," a phenomenon that the author concludes isn't even really a phenomenon, let alone a systematized religious movement. I enjoyed the book overall, but I still think my favorite part of it is the photograph of Anton LaVey posing with Sammy Davis, Jr.

I found The Patience Stone a bit difficult to get into at first. The style is reminiscent of a one-person theatre production, with the main character narrating her own thoughts in a way that can seem forced in any situation and unusual and unusual in a printed medium (as printed narration can usually take advantage of the power of summary). I think I quite liked the book in the end. The characters have no names, nor does their location, and a very specific story of one woman, her life, marriage, and secrets, is blurred at the edges and made fable-like and larger-than-life, poetic. I would be curious to reread it in the original French.

If you read one book this year about people eating each other on the high seas, make it this one!

One of those books about how life can change at any moment. I really liked this one.

This was a fun, YA adventure! My boys will love this book someday and I am having my daughter read it right now! It made me want to Google air ships of the early 1900's! I have always been fascinated by the Hindenburg. What really pulled me in and what was most fascinating about this story was the discovery of an odd species existing on and around the island. It makes you wonder...are there really unknown species waiting to be found in some remote part of the world???
