(Reprinted from the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography [cclapcenter.com]. I am the original author of this essay, as well as the owner of CCLaP; it is not being reprinted illegally.) This is just one of a whole series of incredibly good-looking books I've received in the last few years from various Canadian small presses, one of the many benefits of living in a country that spends so much government money on the arts (nearly all of these books have the Canadian Council on the Arts listed on their copyright pages as a part financier of their projects); this one, for example, written by Goodreads regular Lance Blomgren and put out by the always excellent conundrum press, is a series of "micro-stories" that are all conceptually based around a sequence of walk-up apartments and stores and their resulting interior environments, telling a nebulous tale of relationships and alienation among a group of urban ne'er-do-wells that isn't exactly traditionally linear, but unlike more experimental work can at least be narratively followed from one short bit to the next. The story itself, although not bad, is no great shakes either, the kind of thing you'd expected from a typical clever MFA student; but Walkups is getting a few extra points today simply for being designed and outputted so incredibly sharply, one of the few saving graces among trade paperbacks these days that's going to allow a select amount of them to still be financial successes. It comes recommended to those looking for something unusual and of high quality. Out of 10: 8.4

300 pages too long, but could appreciate the comicbook drawing scenes. Does anyone edit anymore?

a pleasant read but nothing new; who doesn't like reading about overcoming racism?

Very likeable main character. And I liked that it is written in letters/diary format-that was annoying at first but you get used to it quick

Vampires are supposed to be classy, any creature that is alive for thousands of year and hasn't gained some incredible power is totally unbelievable. Much more interesting than modern day vampire stories, like Buffy.

This is one of those book that has a two sections, so I read it with a big break in the middle. Ultimately, though, you have to finish it, because it's like a big soap opera. I enjoyed it a lot.

This was really quirky, and definitely intended for an older audience than 5- and 3-year-olds. However, that said, my children actually enjoyed it. After reading the first chapter, I fully expected to set it aside for another couple of years, but the kids asked for more of Professor Sherman, and I obliged. They were most interested in life on the island of Krakatoa--the restaurant government and home inventions. By the end, though, I think we were all a bit worn out.

This is a fun book. It has lots of interesting twists and philosophical references. It was very strange to read it at the exact time that I was also teaching my children how to play solitaire. Do we choose the novels we read or do they choose us? EEK!

errata editions has a series where they republished classic and long gone photo books. Zdenek Tmej's "The Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness" is a remarkable work of this photographer's images of a nazi forced labor camp in Breslau, Poland. A hell, but not a hell thrown in your face. There is a quiet despair in the the black and white photographs. But this edition by errata is really about the photo book itself. It documents what it looked like when it came out in 1945. The original editions are very very rare. So what is left is a beautiful production of a book on a book. On one level it is a beautiful reference book on a book that is no longer here. Which makes it kind of depressing, but also its a sublime thought. These editions are more than a ghost version of a book. This is an essential book on work that can't disappear.
