This book was better than I thought it was going to be. It was very interesting. It was Nazi Germany from a different perspective than most books are written or accounts given. The main character was a young girl who grows into a teenager, poor and on the wrong side of the tracks. She's a foster child and her foster parents don't support the Fuhrer, but they're virtually helpless before the Nazi party and their government. It was well written and creative. The language was good and the story took some unusual twists and turns. The authors said that it was partially inspired by his parents stories about growing up in Germany at that time. I almost wish he could have applied his narrative powers to telling the true stories. For topics and situations as serious as the ones covered in the book, I usually prefer to be emotionally affected by the true story. I feel a little bit manipulated to be affected by a fictional story. Yes, fictional settings and characters can make us think about the real circumstances. I just hate books that make me cry, and I feel like it was a waste to cry over fiction when there's so much real sad stuff in the world.

The Girl Who Cried Monster is afflicted with that terrible Goosebumps condition: the plot does not have enough content to fill a book; it would've been better suited as a short story. While the dreadful padding is difficult to ignore, the story does manage to maintain a reasonable level of suspense -- at least enough to get you through to the end.

What a shame that a book with ostensibly good information is written in such a judgmental, condescending tone. I think the way in which parental advice is given is just as important as the advice itself. Ms. Hogg fails at this completely. Rarely do I rate books so low...

Wow. At almost 1200 pages of small text, this book is really intimidating at first, but it has been called one of the most well researched biographies ever written. And the subject matter is really interesting to me, so I decided to read it. That and oh, that my boss told me I had to :) This is the life story of Robert Moses. Moses is said to have had the largest impact on the landscape of the city of New York and the state of New York. Whatever you think of his tactics (I don't think much of them and actually think he was a pretty horrible person) he developed methods that enabled him to get an unbelievable amount of public works projects done. He created parks, built bridges and parkways, housing projects and public facilities like the United Nations Building. He wrote legislation that no one else understood but that gave him power beyond anything that any public official had ever had in the United States (except for maybe the President). But his process did not involve any other wants, needs or values besides his own. He destroyed people's careers, was prejudiced against minorities and low-income people (as evidenced by where and how his projects were built) and he tore up neighborhoods. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that wants to read a good biography or that is interested in urban planning/affairs or politics. That is if you have the time and patience to read it.

Star of the Morning is the first in a trilogy of a fantasy/romance series. This book sets the backdrop for the story and builds on the characters. We're introduced to Morgan and her band of mercenary friends as she sets out on her quest to deliver an item to a king. Along the way she meets two brothers, who aren't what they seem, and they join the group in their journey. I especially liked the dialog between characters, it was snappy and witty. I didn't think the world building was especially great, but the story kept me engaged. I have read the whole series and do think it gets better. However, it definitely is a romance within a fantasy setting. So if you are looking for a straight fantasy, this might not be the trilogy for you, as the main focus is the relationship between the H/H, and the world builing, good versus evil, etc isn't anything new and exciting.

This was such a fun read - I love this cast of characters! I am a little worried though...there were a lot of happy endings...surely that can't mean the end, can it?

my sister and a group of her friends (all under 20) put on this play, among others, for charity. maybe i'm simply not that experienced when it comes to plays, but i absolutely loved what they made of it. the characters may be extraordinary people, but they struggle with what are really ordinary issues when you strip away the details - trust, love, betrayal. the performance made me want to find the script, so i was delighted to see it pop up while i was randomly going through the quiz because i was rather at a loss for where to find it.

There are some beautiful and impressive insights into life and human nature here, and some very entertaining moments but, man, too many words. Could have been a masterpiece with half as many words.

Kitchen Confidential gets to the guts of the food service industry. Though his writing style is forthright and irreverant, Bourdain taps into the epicurian in each of us. He recognizes and celebrates the sensual side of food and dining that makes me want to be fat forever. The book tells the story of Bourdain's initiation to kitchen life and his subsequent and tumultuous rise to success as a chef. But for all of its autobiographical material it never forgets what it is: a book for people who love food. Not just who love to eat, but who love food. He takes glee in reminding us that all of the pretentions of haute cuisine stand on the backs of an underpaid immigrant workforce headed by a team of misfits who can't function in the daytime world. And blesses them both with heartfelt homage.

19. yüzyılın sonlarında New York'ta geçen psikolojik gerilim filmi.
