Probably the most important recent book on contemporary shamanism.

Barack Obama is becoming one of the biggest names in current American politics. That is why this book is so refreshing to read- his words are clear and honest. He is imperfect- and this makes him an accessable political figure in this time of politicians who try to portray an imagine of perfection and infallability. My only complaint is that Obama is clearly not an author by trade- the book drags at times.

CALLING FOR ANGELS, by Alex Smith, is a charming story about an extraordinary girl. First off, let me just say that I was incredibly impressed that a fourteen year old- Alex Smith wrote and published a book. Em's voice was fresh and unique because of this author being the same age. Typical situations dealing with cliques and peer pressure were prevalent and it brought me back to a time where those things were the biggest issues of each day. I felt Smith was incredibly insightful in her views of angels and death. Her imagination flourished and I found myself captivated in the world she created. Em was definitely older than her years in the way she dealt with her grandmother being sick and her brother's messed up path through life. I rooted for Em the whole time and I think you will too. I had only a one issue with the book, but it did not hinder my regard for the book at all. My first issue was Kai's POV. The book flipped back and forth between Em and Kai's POV. I felt Kai's voice wasn't as strong as Em's and I wish I could have been left in the dark instead of knowing his thoughts. His attraction to Em was just there without any real reason for it and I found myself wanting to get to the next 'Em' part. I loved that this book took place in the UK. I did have trouble with some of the slang and the way that the levels in school were situated but I did enjoy the new setting! Overall, Smith wholly encompassed the world from a fourteen year old perspective and I look forward to reading more of her future books. original post: http://www.sithereandread.com/2011/04...

This book is so unusual, and has such bizarre illustrations, I just HAD to have it in my collection!!! It's mostly a counting book, woven into a tale about a family that receives a penguin in a crate every day of the year -- and all the issues that can come from having too many pets in one place. It's farcical, but immediately loveable. My favorite page is when: "Daddy paced around in a circle, Mommy jumped into action (with the garden hose, and Amy went crazy (shouting: "Aargh! Penguin Stew!!!")." Hahaha! Such a great book!

I love this series. However, I felt that the ending was too rushed. I had a few pages left of the book and actually thought the stand-off with Kalona was going to be in Book 6. I wish the end was more drawn out (and had a bit more follow-up, questions answered and conclusion) That said, this series is awesome. I like the charcters - they're real. Our heroine makes mistakes, gets into messy problems but she follows her heart. And it has enough twists and turns to amuse adults (as well as the YA audience the books are aimed at). It's not life-shattering but it's amusing and a bit of escapism.

An uneven collection of stories. Enjoyed "Sawdust" and "Blue Lick," two stories told from a youngster's perspective that threw out poisonous humor in daggers. The stories were no less insightful on matters of living in the hollow. I found "House Raising" to be Offutt's finest writing, a deep tone and dark atmosphere maintained throughout that was nothing short of masterful. "Nine Ball" was a little too much on billiard balls, but it also got down and dirty. At other times, I found these stories similar to Ron Rash's formula----grabbing subject matter that will appeal to outsiders who want to read about an exotic Appalachia more than understand it. He takes us down yet more roads of Melungeons, marijuana patches, and medicine men. "The Leaving One" particularly sank as hopelessly hokey, reminding me of Gloria Naylor's Mama Day, superficial cheese. The best of these stories are four and five stars, but the other half takes away from the overall collection.

Amazing!! Loved learning more about this legendary figure - including the stuff that isn't as positive. I thought this was fascinating and HIGHLY recommend it!

Very good book by Michener though not my favorite. The sections about the Alamo were memorable and stand out in my mind. I also learned much about the way that the state was settled and formed. A definite good read.
