This book is flawed-- it's oddly organized, I skimmed some parts. And it turns out that brains are way too complex for us to really know the most interesting stuff about why music can affect mood so much, which is what I was interested in. But there's tons of interesting information in there anyway, and the beginning material on the elements on music theory is great I think -- I have some musical background so I knew a bit about it but it seemed very lucid to me. And I find that I get way more out of music after having read this book.

I got about 5 chapters in, and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't really capturing my attention, so I put it down.

It's not that often you see a book blurb by the brilliant Daniel Woodrell so when you do it's a good bet that the book is worth a look. The Terror of Living does have a blurb by Mr Woodrell along with blurbs by the great Tom Franklin, Michael Koryta and a certain Stephen King. With thumbs up from this great line-up the book certainly had a lot to live up to. Glad to say that it delivered on all counts. Starting as a drug drop that goes wrong and continuing with the subsequent chase down it had me glued to the page. The story is told in short bursts as Phil Hunt and his wife Nora are pursued by smalltown Deputy Sherrif Drake, DEA agent Driscoll & cold, cold hearted hit-man Grady. Throw in a corrupt lawyer, desperate Vietnamese drug mules and two ruthless Vietnamese drug dealers and you have a non-stop, hard-hitting belter of a novel. The short, sharp nature of each section keeps things ticking nicely and means that you desperately want to see what happens next. Also gives Mr Waite chance to flesh out all his characters, and he does so beautifully, and ensures that there is never a lull in the action. Really, really recommend this and Mr Waites next book cannot come soon enough for me.

There are tons of mixed reviews on this book, it seems people either love it or hate it. One look at my rating tells you just where I stand on the spectrum. However, I wouldn't go so far as saying I hate this book. Actually, I just found it rather annoying. That being said, I've noticed a lot of five-star reviews are from people who also lost a loved one. I'm not saying you have to lose someone dear to you to enjoy this book, it just seems her page by page battle with grief hits closest to home for some people while others just find it tedious. Because I was never emotionally drawn, or even touched, by this book I ended up forcing myself to finish it. If you're not captivated by the first few pages then it seriously becomes a chore to finish. Fortunately, the author has a unique writing style that's easy and quick to read so the book can be finished in a day. Unfortunately, for me it's a day (actually two) I wish I had back.

Helene Cooper was born in Liberia, the daughter of two established family lines dating back to the early settlement from America. The family was well-to-do, living in a huge mansion by the ocean, complete with servants, cars, private school. The family adopted a local girl named Eunice who grew up with Helene as a sister. After a coup in 1980, the family was among the hunted. Ultimately they escaped to the States, leaving Eunice behind in war-torn Liberia. Helene grew up and became a correspondent with the Wall Street Journal. After a near death experience covering the war in Iraq, Helene decided it was time to return to Liberia to locate her sister. I knew very little of the history of Liberia - I know more now as a result of reading this. A couple times I felt like the history got tedious, but it is short sections. Found myself getting emotionally caught up in the turmoil and violence as it unfolded.

This was a phenomenal novel!! It really made me think about what happens in the afterlife. Ben Sherwood's writing was thought provoking! I haven't enjoyed a book so much in a long time. This is one story I won't soon forget. From the dust jacket: "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud tells the haunting story of a young man who narrowly survives a terrible car wreck that kills his little brother. Years later, the brothers' bond remains so strong that it transcends the normal boundaries separating life and death. Charlie St. Cloud lives in a snug New England fishing village. By day he tends the lawns and monuments of the ancient cemetery where his younger brother, Sam, is buried. Graced with an extraordinary gift after surviving the accident, he can still see, talk, and even play catch with Sam's spirit. But townsfolk whisper that Charlie has never recovered from his loss. Into his carefully ordered life comes Tess Carroll, a captivating, adventuresome woman training for a solo sailing trip around the globe. Fate steers her boat into a treacherous storm that blows her back to harbor, to a charged encounter with Charlie, and to a surprise more overwhelming than the violent sea itself. Charlie and Tess discover a beautiful and uncommon connection that leads to a race against time and a desperate choice between death and life, between the past and the future, between holding on and letting go."

This is, without question, the best book I've read so far this year. Yes, it was initially confusing--who are these people with the story in italics, and what do they have to do with Taylor?--but it has a most satisfying ending.
