Reading with Bella, and she really likes it. Not all of them are gems, but I am happy to expose her to (even silly) poetry, and she loves, adores, and listens to the accompanying cd every night. Silverstein is a very talented reader.

I thought this was going to be light fluff, but it had some surprises in it that made it on the heavy side. I liked it, even if it wasn't what I was expecting.

Despite any bad hype this series has gotten, they're all very well written, contain entertaining characters and cohesively carry along a well developed storyline. The first two books are definitely more kid-oriented and may tend to chase people away, but once you get past those (which you can do in a day or two), the rest of the books get progressively more mature, darker, and more fun to read. By the end of book 6, there's been some serious character development and the story continues to keep up the reader's interest.

There is still a wide-eyed teenager living inside me, and this book makes my melty twee little heart break and sing in equal measure. When I was 16 and read it for the first time, that was as close to a transcendental experience as I've ever had. Since then, I have re-read it roughly twenty thousand times, always whenever I need to just submerge myself in drenching beauty and angst.

In this award-winning novel for young people, all the black people (with possibly one exception) are honest, kind, hardworking, ambitious, intelligent, and good looking. All the white people (with one or two exceptions) are cruel, dishonest, malevolent rednecks, who persecute the "colored people" for no reason at all. Historically, the Jim Crow era wasn’t all smiles and sassafrass tea, but there were good and bad people on both sides of the street, just like now. In our current climate of political correctness, the pendulum has swung in the other direction, but young people are still required to read this tripe. Let's hope that English teachers will soon get a clue.

I've been a fan of Andre's since I was a teenager and I found this book to be exactly what I thought it would be. He was insightful, honest, thought provoking, and just as he is on the court.. I couldn't keep my eyes off of the pages. I read the book cover to cover in a matter of hours. I have watched him rise to the top, fall to the bottom and rise back to the top again but, I have never been more proud of him (except during his charity work) when I read this book.

This beautifully written novel tells the story of one woman's journey of self-discovery. The novel doesn't only contend with Ana Howland's increasing sense of being smothered by a domineering and controlling husband, but also shows her growing realization that she has always lived under the overbearing weight of an oppressive relationship. Neither her authoritarian mother nor her dictatorial husband can accept her as a separate and imperfect person. The Road from La Cueva is full of metaphor and in the hands of Sheila Ortego, the use of this device brings a richness and poetry to a topic that might seem trite in other hands. We are given a deeper glimpse into Ana's struggles through the images of the hostile road from La Cueva, the stubborn clay shaped by the potter, and the Changing Woman Ceremony (sometimes called the Sunrise Ceremony). The road to and from Ana's home is a very tangible representation of those oppressive relationships in her life. When this dirt road is dry, it is as hard and unyielding as rock ... ready to tear up and break what dares to pass over it. Wet, the road is even worse. It oozes over and sucks everything into it with "a satisfied, brown belch." The beauty of the imperfect is gorgeously represented through the craft of pottery. As Ana learns this craft from Michael, a co-worker, she notices that one of his creations has an uneven rim. He ran his fingers around the rim of the cup. "See how this isn't even? The Japanese call this shibui, the flaw that makes something beautiful. The shape has to have some room, some freedom." ... "Like with people," he said, and she nodded. It is this very room and freedom that is lacking in Ana's life. She has allowed the oppressive behaviors of others to weigh down her very being and she knows that it is something only she can change. One of the most beautiful chapters in the book is the one describing the Changing Woman Ceremony, a Native American ceremony celebrating the change from girlhood to womanhood. Ana already knows that the means to change her life is within reach. It becomes more apparent as she watches the ceremony and recognizes her own internal strength and power as a woman. No longer will she be passively shaped by others. Ana already has the ability to gain command over her weaknesses, to be physically and emotionally strong, and to endure and suffer with dignity. Before the readers' eyes, "[she is shaped:] ... into the woman she [is:] to become." Her deep compassion and resilience form a strong core around which to emerge. The Road from La Cueva is an encouraging look at the power we all have to shape our own lives. The passion and beauty of the writing is something that will draw me back to this story repeatedly.

"Lucifer's Bloody Balls"--Bones "I know I'm yummy, nummy"-Vlad LOLLLLL Oh, Bones & Cat and the rest of these characters can never get boring, nor can I ever get tired of them. Once again, another roller coaster ride, filled with emotions, packed with action and sex scenes that make you blush. I don't think I'll ever enjoy a supernatural duo, more than I enjoy Bones & Cat. What makes this duo even greater than others, is the fact that the woman, the heroine, doesn't ANNOY me AT ALL. She's not a sap, a mope and she doesn't need to be rescued at every turn. I've always admired that about Cat. That's what made me love the series, from book #1. Cat is not someone to mess with. Female or not, she can totally kick ass and be down with the big boys. She proves it again, in "This Side of the Grave" Apollyum has a contract out for her head. He's gathered the whole ghoul nation and wants to take out all the vampires and take over himself. First, he wants to start with killing Cat. Cat teams up with Bones, Menecheres, Vlad, Spade, Tate, Fabian & Dave on a thriller ride of excitement. It was so great to have Menecheres & Vlad front and center again. Vlad is one of my favorite characters and he does not disappoint in this book. There was also sad moment. Uncle Don, has been plagued with Cancer and against his wishes, he does not want to be saved or "turned" into a vampire. So, Cat has to deal with the fact that she's losing her only other family member, aside from her mother. Not to mention, her mother is now determined to join the Vampire race and fight. She's even taken up training, and it's putting Cat over the edge. Can she save the Vampire race, herself, and her mother from harm? Can she stand by and lose Don? Will her and Bones ever have a peaceful moment? High stakes, lots of laughter and great action!
