I read fragments of this during the week, and then eagerly anticipated the last several hours I spent this afternoon devouring it on the porch with coffee (yep - it was warm enough for that! for awhile...) and then in bed. I'm surprised at its low rating - I'll have to read some reviews. It's formula, but I liked her storytelling. Oh yah - and for any other His Dark Materials devotees - it's also Cambridge.

The Last Time I Saw You by Elizabeth Berg is her most recent book. Okay, so full disclosure: I’m biased because Elizabeth Berg is one of my favorite authors, so without question I was predisposed to love this book. This story takes place over a couple of days and follows the characters as they make the decision whether or not to go to their 40th high school reunion. The pivotal point in each character’s decision making is that “it’s the last reunion”, which tips the scales in the “go!” direction for all of them except for one. She goes because her husband, from whom she is separated, begs her to go. The characters are so genuine; they pull you right into the story because you want to know what is going to happen to them, how it all will turn out for them. Even when the future looks bleak for some, if you have read Elizabeth Berg’s books in the past, you don’t worry too much about the outcome. This is an author who cares about and cares for her readers. There will be no tragedies at the end (as there are in so many of Jodi Picoult’s books) that make you wish you’d never opened the book in the first place. I’m finding that people either love Berg’s books or they hate them, so if you are not in the “love” camp by the time you get about five chapters in, follow the http://kwrites.wordpress.com/2010/05/... too short to read bad books” dictum and toss it aside. You will know which camp you fall into because if you don’t want to put it down and walk away by chapter 5, then you will not want to put it down until you get to the end, find out how things work out for them all. I must say it again: I loved this book.

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein is a wonderful collection of children’s poem’s and drawings by the author. I have read this book several times, and each time is as good as the last. Shel has a magical way of making the ridiculous come to life, and knows how to make kids laugh. This book makes poetry fun for kids, and isn’t hard to understand. This is one of the first collections of poetry I ever read, way back in elementary school, and I would recommend it for all ages. It’s sure to put a smile on anyone’s face and really show you how enjoyable poetry can be.

Interesting story. The plot included some different kinds of paranormals which added a different angle to good and bad. The story was odd in that for most of it, the reader knows none of the reasons why things are happening, who the good guy or bad guy wad or what the basic path the events in the story were following and taking. In the end it all came together and was a good read. I can see where many people may not like so much unknown or may not be able to follow the plot, but after all is said and done, I did enjoy the writing style.

I absolutly loved this book. It is my all-time favorite Dean Koontz book. I have read it several times, and I'll be reading it several more times in the future. The plot was something I have never read before, and the characters were interesting. Every event that happened in the book just sucked you in and made you want to keep reading. With stories like this one, it can be hard to end the book in a way that is satisfying to the reader, but I felt good with the ending and liked it.
