not to shabby for a sequel. Not as powerful as the first book, but how can you top a car crash that kills your whole family. I enjoyed that the book was from Adam's perspective. I hope she leaves it at that, because while the book didn't lend itself to a trilogy, I wouldn't be entirely surprised... A good read, though, definitely!

i dont think i could possibly describe this book other than it's not what you think it is. i was blown away time after time after delving into this 1000+ page book. every single page is worth it. how does one accomplish that? and stephenson succeeds in injecting pure humor into this novel where i actually do laugh out loud and not just chuckle in my head. brilliant, intelligent but not pretentious, funny, AND reads like a book you could read on a beach vacation, but not written that way. i am way thoroughly impressed.

Even better than the first. Hap and Oates and Umber travel to strange and disturbing faraway places and run into a tyrannical king, Desolas Island, soul crabs, dragons, and spider folk. I enjoy this odd, well-drawn blend of characters: solid Oates who cannot speak a lie; young Hap worried and anxious about his past and future (some clues emerge in this tale); and the brilliant, manic-depressive Umber. Unique and enjoyable. Beautifully written.

Why this book is out of print is beyond my understanding. It is the perfect companion to Grandfather Twilight (also by Berger) and the two together would make a lovely "special boxed set edition". Berger's drawings glow in ways that many other illustrators fail to capture. That is my favorite thing about this book -- the glowing pictures.

I'm usually a big Kleypas fan but I think this one was a bit too "old school romance" for my tastes. I really liked the beginning of the book, before Alex and Lily got together. I liked them both individually and was looking forward to their relationship. That's when it fell apart for me. The sex scenes reminded me of why I didn't read romance back in the 80s and into the early 90s. (view spoiler)
