The book drags a little, but provides great insight into a prominent American political figure.

I've read all the Roberto Bolano books in my house. I don't know what to do with myself.

There's no question that the first GoT book is everything I'd hoped it would be as a big fan of the show. It's well worth a read for any fans who want a deeper understanding of the world. But I still had a gnawing feeling throughout that I knew what was going to happen. Perhaps this is just because the events of season 1 are so epic and since I remember season 2 somewhat less well, the feeling will be more slight next books. This thing is dense, so be sure to give it plenty of breathing space. Now I want to go back and rewatch the first season.

Reminded me of Goethe's "Sorrows of Young Werther" but in actuality, it's nothing like it. I think Voltaire is somewhat more didactic and in the end, appears to be an optimist. Maybe an 'optimist wounded' [by life] is more accurate, but an optimist nevertheless. Thanks to the footnotes in this edition, you don't really miss out on Voltaire's commentary on the people and happenings of his day (18th century) which is nice, but it served to interrupt the flow of reading every now and again. I think it was a good choice to have included them. This book is surprisingly modern. There's still a lot to be learned of tolerance and patience from this guy who reportedly had great influence over the founding fathers of America (Franklin, Washington, Jefferson) and I'm sure his ideas trickled into our Constitution. Anyway, Voltaire's Candide is afflicted yet sunny, terrible yet breezy. I think it's a must read for people who enjoy a bit of philosophizing.

Ayn Rand's most biographical novel reveals a lot about Ayn Rand, which is why I think I enjoyed it so much. It's shorter than the others and easier to read. I'd recommend it to get into her works.

Published in 1977, the year of The Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy In The UK”, the first Clash album and a million other squalls, “Fatale” is a noir novel about a hit woman hiding out in a dull suburban village. What makes “Fatale” stand out from the hit woman pack is the way it skewers the social mores of the bourgeoisie along with a strong presence of Bunuelian surrealism, par example: “She went on eating and drinking and progressively lost control of herself. She leaned over, still chewing, and opened the briefcase and pulled out fistfuls of banknotes and rubbed them against her sweat-streaked belly and against her breasts and her armpits and between her legs and behind her knees. Tears rolled down her cheeks even as she shook with silent laughter and kept masticating”.

I really liked this book. The plot revolves around the relationship between Danny, a convicted criminal and Miller, an FBI agent. Miller is assigned to protect Danny from his drug boss who is trying to kill him. During this time both men battle their own internal demons. Danny has to come to terms with the people from his past that have hurt him and in turn the people he has hurt. Miller has to come to terms with his own feelings that are buried so deep he doesn't even recognize his life anymore. Throughout this book the lines between black and white, good and bad are blurred and the author did a beautiful job at bringing to life this "gray" area in both men, both as individuals and as a couple. The story takes place in the present day but we learn about their pasts through a series flashbacks. The story is very well told. The characters are strong and realistic. I loved the build up to their relationship. I could feel their emotions, their internal struggles, uncertainties, love. Oh and their personalities, spot on. Love Danny's sarcastic wit.
