This Bildungsroman of Marcelo Sandoval takes place in the summer between his junior and senior years of high school. He is somewhere on the Autism spectrum, though his place has never really been nailed down. Having planned to work with the ponies at Paterson (his school), Marcelo is thrown for a loop when his father, Arturo, has him work in the mailroom at Arturo's law firm instead. While there, he is finding his way in "the real world." This world involves a complex set of rules, emotions, and difficult choices for Marcelo to discover and understand. Wonderfully told, the story really takes off about a third or more of the way in, when Marcelo is going to discover he has quite a choice to make. Whose rules will he follow? The two knocks I have against this book is that it did take a while to get going, and is likely to drop some readers along the way because of that. Also, I find it hard to believe the narrator is on the Autism spectrum. It's not that his actions and words don't make sense with that, but the way the novel is written is clearly by an experienced author, and not someone with Autism or Asperger's. I suppose that's a compliment to Francisco X. Stork as an author, but I just had a hard time believing this as a first-person book.
It seemed to me to be a little slow to start, but once I got into it kept me reading and made me want to know whodunit, although I did figure out who the killer was much sooner than Katie. Still, I liked the characters and the setting, and I hadn't figured out all of the why, so I will certainly be looking forward to reading more of Lorraine's work.
WOW! I'm really surprised that so many people liked this book. It had no character development, too many side stories, the "witty" dialogue was forced and overall, written poorly. Thank goodness it was free or I would have been seriously upset at myself for wasting money.

This book was about a character who simply wanted to have a baby. The inability to have a child drove this character's marriage to divorce and she ends up falling in love with another woman. This book explored what gay people deal with and opened my eyes to just how much I take for granted as a straight married woman. This was a beautiful story about love while exploring the hate that some love can be.

I read this book several years ago, so my memory isn't very clear of it...however, I remember being very interested and that the characters enthralled me

I didn't like Excellent Women quite as much as I enjoyed Quartet in Autumn, but I'd still heartily recommend it. Barbara Pym is becoming like a friend to me. She writes very well--and with wonderful wit and originality. Excellent Women tells the story of Mildred, a single woman in her 30s who spends a great deal of time and energy absorbing and working to solve the problems of those around her. She is one of those "excellent women" whom others seem keen to dump their burdens on--yet Mildred seems willing (or perhaps unable to be unwilling) to shoulder those burdens rather than confronting her own sense of self. One of the things I like most about Pym is that she resists the easy plot that would offer to readers just what they've come to expect from lesser novelists: that a kind, warm-hearted single woman would find true love and end up married by novel's end. Pym recognizes the potential and possibility of love without remotely implying that love solves all wounds.
