As an adventure this is not one of Heinlein's better stories, although enjoyable enough. As a treatise on the cold war, racism, slavery, the feminist movement, and morality it truly earns its billing as "the most controversial book in science fiction." Amazingly this story was published in 1961 at the height of tension between USSR and USA; the whole nation was caught up in visions of an apocalyptic nightmare. There were bomb shelters, many as elaborate as the one that Hugh Farnham built in this novel outfitted with everything needed to restart civilization. At the same time, the tension surrounding segregation was also coming to a head. As a result of a nuclear strike, Hugh's family is thrown into a world where everything they know is upside down and topsy-turvy. The family consists of Hugh, his wife Grace, son Duke, daughter Karen, Duke's girlfriend Barbara, and Jim his negro caretaker. Farnham is one of Heinlein's prototypical 'get-it-done', brilliant, well-read, enlightened, and prudent characters. Hugh is of course not a a racist, not a chauvinist, does not believe in class superiority (we're all equal),not a Russian hater, and is true to his word in the highest degree. It's definitely worth reading in context of what was happening in the country at the time. If the story were as good as the commentary woven throughout then it would be a 5 start must read on my list.

So unfortunately, a major scene in this book was spoiled for me, so I don't feel I can give a totally genuine review because my attitude toward the book changed after I knew what was coming. LAME! But this book was pretty exciting and had some crazy stuff happen in it! And another cliff-hanger ending...

You have to be in the mood to enjoy the Little books - cozy vintage mysteries that are far more notable for their classic rom-com banter than their plots.

This is a teacher I had who introduced me to the Reggio Emilia schools and their methods. This is a compilation of her speeches and written pieces as well as interviews with her that I find extremely thought provoking and encouraging. One of my favorite pieces is "The Courage for Utopia" where she urges us to realize how much the problems that exist in education are mostly issues of a lack of imagination and courage. It is true that it is a heck of a lot easier to risk less by expecting little, but look where that has gotten us!
(If you haven't read the last book this review does have one minor spoiler) Simon Green once again returns us to the Drood universe, the shamans of humanity. In the last book the Drood's took on the immortals and suffered many losses along the way, including Eddie's at the end. But even death can't keep Eddie from trying to save the world. This time a Satanic Conspiracy threatens all of humanities souls and only the Drood family can put a stop to it. Along the way the Librarian is healed, a mysterious presence is revealed, and old friends come back from the seeming dead. This book has everything that we've come to expect from Simon R. Green's Drood Universe, fast paced action, some tired cliches from spy films/books, and twists and turns that we didn't see coming. This was an excellent read and I would say it's probably the second best book of the series (the best book being the first one.) Green does have a tendency to take up a few too many pages with action and repeated phrases and it does have some plot holes if you've read the rest of the series, but overall its an excellent read and I can't wait for the next book.

This is a unique book that I found intellectually interesting, and I loved it as someone who's familiar with Chicago. But I found it to be emotionally challenging and, ultimately, very depressing. I know that's not really a good reason to ding a book, but this is my review and I can do what I want, so there!
