This book was recommended to me, so I thought I'd try it, the horror fan that I am. I couldn't put it down, a fast-paced storyline where the Reverend Archer McFall is believed to be God's Second Son and Jesus a liar, creepy! The characters were not very complex, with the exception of Ronnie Day and Sheriff Frank Littlefield, the good guys, but that is to be expected with your average horror novel. Frank is haunted with guilt over the death of his little brother, a Halloween prank gone terribly wrong, and Ronnie is terrified of the Bell Monster in the haunted red church. This novel was a Bram Stoker Award First Novel Nominee in 2003, great page-turner, scary! I look forward to reading more of Scott Nicholson's work very soon.

I'll admit - to me, some of these puns make no sense whatsoever.

Quite possibly the funniest semi-autobiographical book I have read - not many books can make me laugh out loud on a crowded train. Even if you don't know much about cricket, it's still well worth a look!

This book looks dull I know, but it was incredible. I read this well before I started my graduate classes, but I remember feeling like this book was my own personal amazing professor teaching me everything about the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA. Very important information for all of us in this country. Although much is broken with the system, the author has done a lot of work correcting it and has lots of useful suggestions.

I can't wait to read this book! However, I'm probably not actually choosing to read it... if I'm to believe Hawking and Mlodinow: "It is hard to imagine how free will can operate if our behavior is determined by physical law, so it seems that we are no more than biological machines and that free will is just an illusion." (pg 32)

Ah, so the question of, "What is a memoir?" still plagues me, and Augusten Burroughs "memoir" adds a horrible cough to my illness. Again, this book was right off the shelves of Bobzy B. Arthur's library of homo-lit (please tell me if that is too derogatory). He said it was a strange book that leads you in all sorts of directions, except the way you want it to...I couldn't agree more. Burroughs can tell a story, but he can't make me care for his characters or for him. It must be a personality clash. Besides the fact, I was only reading the book to prepare myself for the film version. Poor Annette Benning, she can't get anything right. The sad thing was, I wasn't turned off by the kooky characters and the strange things they did, I was turned off by Burroughs unjust portrait of the people who raised him. I gave it two stars because although I didn't like it, I still read the whole gosh darn thing.

Richard Kim is to be praised for capturing this time period so movingly well. The title comes from the fact that the Japanese occupation forced Koreans to take Japanese names, and "lose" their old ones. This book depressed me, literally. While reading, it raised my stress level. But that's nothing to shy away from. It's a (mostly) true story.

A great story, going back and forth in time. I enjoyed reading about a different type of "mixed" couple - Chinese and Japanese. So often I read about a person of my ethnic background forming a relationship with a person of a different background, so it was interesting to see how mixed relationships are viewed in other cultures. Also enlightening was America's role in the internment of Japanese during WWII and the impact that had on many Asians.

It is amazing to see how Gruwell accomplishes so much in the classroom, especially considering the fact that she was working with an extremely difficult group of students. I am inspired by her work, and also overwhelmed. I think that is the danger of this book for teachers--feeling like they can't accomplish a fraction of what Gruwell succeeds in doing. But I think the benefits of reading this book outweigh the negatives.
