****MILD SPOILERS**** I read Book of a Thousand Days because it is my friend's FAVORITE book and she let me borrow it. At first, I wasn't sure I was going to like it... Then, before I knew it, I was more than half-way through in one day. By the next morning, I had finished the book. There were many things that I liked about this book. I really enjoyed the Mongolian theme and setting. While I have never read the original fairy-tale this book is based on, I am sure that the setting of B1000 lent a new side to the story. It was interesting and different from most books that I've read, and the cultural aspects revolving around the setting were refreshing and fascinating. Dashti is a strong protagonist, and although she seemed relatively one-sided at first, she definitely developed more of a personality and a voice as the story progressed and she became disillusioned with the traditions of her life thus far. I adored My Lord the cat and Mucker the yak. The love story was predictable, but still romantic and sweet. The conflicts were intense, albeit short-lived. The illustrations were beautiful as well. Of course, there were also the aspects of the book that prevented me from giving it a 5-star rating. While I am fully aware that B1000 is based on a fairy-tale, everything just seemed a little TOO easy to resolve. The book focused a bit too much (at least for me) on descriptions of simple mucker life and singing various songs than on the romance and especially the conflicts. The solutions to the conflicts came instantly when Dashti began to focus on them, and they wrapped up a little too quickly for my taste. Also, the end of the story came too rapidly. I would have been more interested to see more weight placed on the end of the story than the beggining-early middle of it. Essentially though, my issues with the book were mostly just personal preferences. Overall, Book of a Thousand Days was an engrossing story for light-reading and a bit of a guilty pleasure. I would recommend it for mainly girls from middle school and up. While I had my own issues with the book, I did enjoy it overall :D
