Plaintext is my favorite of her autobiographical essay books, but they’re all superb, and this book is probably my second favorite after Plaintext. Nancy Mairs writes incredibly skillfully (she’s a gifted writer), and with complete honesty and a wonderful sense of humor. These linked essays are about her life, especially her ms and her depression. This book, about very serious subjects, is a pleasure to read. Very accessible. Highly recommended.

Barry gave me this book for X-mas and it took awhile for me to pick it up. Excellent choice though. I love stories that take old mythology and put a modern spin on it. I haven't read any Neil Gaiman before either but I definately will be reading more of him now.

I finished this book awhile ago, just haven't been on goodreads in awhile.. I don't know if I should say it, but I loved this book, it was purely entertainment, definitely not a book that I am proud to have read, but it was damn good, damn it! Recommend it to all those girls, and guys who love to shop and find deals...

I didn't realize this was one of those tiny gift books when I ordered it, but I'm really glad that I got it. The quotes are lovely, and I learned about a number of public figures who have been involved in every aspect of the adoption triad. Very sweet and touching.

The subject matter was so moving and interesting, about a young boy's absolute obsession with finding his mother in the US after she'd left him in Honduras. I learned so much about illegal immigrants and how rampant it is for these children to attempt this journey. I wasn't crazy about the writing, though -- short, clipped sentences in the journalistic style (but I've read better journalistic style) and it is somewhat repetitive - first one kids loses an arm, then another kid loses an arm, then another kid loses an arm, so on. The worst brutality involves the Mexicans against the Central Americans. Unfortunately it doesn't offer any ideas about how to fix the problem.

Good, but I was reading rather quickly and didn't really get drawn too far into it. The "dream" scenes with the "Ghost Tree" were vaguely annoying because it sort of steps beyond the realm of realism but are probably necessary to deal with these types of deep feelings, similar to how fantasy can deal with issues of good and evil that would be cheesy in contemporary realistic fiction. The characters felt real and I thought that the realistic part of the ending was nicely and sensitively done.

This was a good effort from a first time author, but it had its flaws. Sometimes I felt like Charlton was trying too hard, using "big words" just because he could. Additionally, his descriptions were repetitive, and that made them boring. The magic system was interesting, but I had a hard time understanding how it worked. It didn't seem to have many logical rules, it was one of those more I-do-whatever-the-author-wants-without-reason kind of magics. I thought Nicodemus was too whiny and self-pitying, so he wasn't a very likable main character. Shannon was a bit more interesting, but I had a hard time not thinking of him as the old wise mentor who knows more than the main character ever will but reveals very little of what he knows. I did like the nice twist at the ending. That will probably keep me reading the series. But I hope Charlton has improved as an author for the second installment.

I'm confused. I mean really confused as to how and why anyone would like this book. It's terribly written. The plot is overdone and stupid. The characters have no redeeming qualities. The "love story" is just ridiculous and the main character mentions, more than once ,that she smells like McDonald's. Weird right?
