This book is absolutely true to life, absorbing, smart and funny A moving novel tracing the relationship of two people who have absoultely nothing in common apart from one thing, they are mad for each other, on the same day each year for 20 years. When I read what this novel was about it went on my TBR list immeadiately I first saw it in WHSmiths in paperback and was so tempted to buy it there and then. It's a must read for anyone and I can't think of anyone who wouldn't read this. Nicholls created such believable characters so in depth that by the end I felt teary on the very last page. He hasn't made the characters to be perfect for each other, sometimes they're not, sometimes they are foolish, cowardly and their behvaiour is unexpected, but thats what is so good about it. This book tugs at your heart strings and parts of the story ring true in my own life and I could really connect with the characters and story on so many levels. Each and every part of the book has a purpose, there isn't any ' well that was pointless' or 'why bother having that chapter' It fitted perfectly & made the novel exactly what it is!

An incredible tour de force. You will be disappointed, if you expect some juicy dirt. Instead, St. Augustine is asking lots and lots deep and heavy questions and is trying to answer them methodically. This isn't an easy read by any stretch, but it is profound, whether you agree with his worldview or not. For example, you may not believe that God is the creator of all things seen and unseen, but Augustine does believe that and so he tries to answer the question "so what did God do the whole time before he got around to creating everything seen and unseen? was there such a thing as time before then? what is time?" Wow.

It was very funny yet action-packed, and I loved all the references to Buffy the Vampire Slayer! The cast of characters is interesting, and they seemed to be fairly well developed. There was commentary from the author at the end, which isn't my thing but might come in handy if a book club were reading and discussing the book.
