This was my first experience with Ishiguro and now I'm hooked. Such a quiet little novel he has constructed. It isn't big and flashy, bandying about the big idea. Instead, that whole thing is a backdrop that never gets fully explained. It just lingers there behind everything, a dark cloud, something sinister that motivates the characters. It works wonderfully. We don't get wrapped up in science fiction or sidetracked by the details. Instead we get a touching portrait of a girl in horribly difficult situation. What works so well in this book though is that it all seems so normal, because to her, it is. It is written as though we know the big secret all along. As if we are a part of the society this society. So instead of being consumed by the big idea, we get get to know the characters. I cared about Kathy and Ruth and Tommy. I think this sets the novel apart from so many others. I cared more about the main characters than about the sinister dark cloud hanging out in the background.

I read this novel, my first Ayn Rand, as a junior in high school. Even though today I do not completely agree with her ideals, I was convinced by her unrelenting take on human autonomy that very first time (being the young, pliable mind with a typical teenage stick-it-to-the-man attitude). Nonetheless, Rand's writing technique and eloquent way of style of expression in The Fountainhead catalyzed my obsession with her work. Yes, the 700+ pages seem daunting, but never enough to stop a re-read.
