Just finished reading this one to my 6 year old. It was wonderful re-reading one of my childhood favorites and I was thrilled that Emily like it just as much as I did. Looking forward to diving into many more from the Dahl library.

2 1/2 Stars~ An okay read that is reminiscent of other siren authors (Stormy). I got reader whiplash in the first two chapter. The instant, mate, bond, connection, feelings, and sex are a put-off (especially the rape/compelled sex during sleep at the beginning). The unbelievable factor reared it's ugly head, but the subject matter and the writer's flow pushed me through to the end. Recommended for those looking for an easy read.

Was put off by the early part that was the stream of consciousness ravings of a neurotic mother but it got better

tHIS IS a beautiflly written and odd story A rich boy from Ne Yor whose mothre (or is she) takes him away to live in Australia I find Peter Carey high on characters and dialogue and setting and well flow, but not really sure at the end of the day I could tell you what this book was about or if it ended happilly or not.

There was some absolutely beautiful writing stored within the pages of this book but it just doesn't make it to my list of great or even close to great books. Maybe with some time she will develop some more maturity in her writing. Some interesting images of Mexico, Texas, and Japan. The Mexico segment of the book was far too graphicaly violent for me. The characters almost got to where you cared about them but just fell short of the mark. Interesting idea to take a myth and turn it into a current day story but I really believe the Lightening Thief was a better book.... Just because a book has high level vocabulary, does not make it a great book. Sorry but no kudos here.

This book has a lot of special meaning for me and perhaps that colors how much I love it, but then again, it is Edith Wharton and she's the best chronicler of manners of the 20th century so perhaps it isn't all personal history. Not only is this book masterful in its descriptions of the minutae of life in NYC society, but the tale of unrequited love it tells is as engaging as it is heartbreaking.

Not my favorite Jane Austen, but this is Jane Austen we're talking about here. Word perfect. (Austen/Classics)

"Read" it as an audio book and although some heavy philosophical concepts were hard to follow in this format, the changes in voice of the narrator gave it a tremendous vividness. It is an extremely thought provoking book and presents a view on ultimate life happiness and satisfaction not found in another other book or theory I have heard of so far, which in itself makes this book worth reading. I have also greatly enjoyed the philosophical comparisons and thought developments, it felt like the author was speaking my language, trying to approach life's ultimate questions with the analytical mind. Even if for some it might be hard going at times I definitely recommend persisting with it or re-reading certain passages to grasp his ideas fully, who knows it might just contain the answers you were looking for all along. References to various philosophers and their works were also a good introductions that prompted further interest in me.
