I found this book on the giveaway shelf at work and was drawn in by the setting of the book - Cornwall, England. When I studied abroad in England back in 1999, I spent a weekend exploring the main towns & villages of Cornwall and fell in love with their charm & quaintness. I was hoping this book would capture that and transport me back to that weekend. This book did describe the lovely landscape that is in Cornwall, but most of the action took place on a family estate. One of the reviews on the book states that Upson captures the Agatha Christie spirit with the book. I agree with that reviewer, this book kept me guessing about what was going to happen next. I did have an aha moment and figured out who one murderer was based on some small details. This book is a quick read and I definitely want to read more by this author.

I really loved Eat, Pray, Love, and wanted to read this to find out how her relationship with Giovanni was going or not, and I got so much more. I love the way Elizabeth reads her books--it's as if she is talking to me, and she is so right on about love and relationships.

Pretty good book, easy to read. I enjoyed the casual reading until the last chapter "A Rage for Justice". Then I had to make a few notes (4 pages). A very good chapter!

A YA Lit novel - probably best for middle school boys who like D&D type books. A fun quick read.

John Reader has an agenda. He loves Africa, a continent that has been misunderstood and misused by Westerners for centuries, and he wants you to love it, too. Reader approaches his “biography of a continent” with unbounded ambition and intelligence, gracefully synthesizing academic arguments from disparate fields to construct a portrait of humanity’s first homeland that is insightful and reverent. The scope is staggering, with detours into geology, evolutionary biology, anthropology, archeology, linguistics, economics, and, of course, history. It is a beautiful journey through the story of how we came to be us, and how African countries came to suffer the tragedies they experience today. Reader does an excellent job of avoiding the romanticization of African traditional ways of life that many sympathetic westerners fall into. Nature is heartless, and life could be brutal. Starvation was—is—a constant threat, and none of our modern notions of human rights applied. But he tries to show that far from being backwards, African cultures achieved something the West never has: homeostasis in cooperation with the environment. Technology evolved locally inasmuch as was needed to adapt to changing conditions, and cultures developed to allow groups of people to live symbiotically without a coercive state. Westerners mistook balance for backwardness, and thus, Reader shows, their (our) influence has been malevolent from the first. From time to time, it is clear that Reader is writing beyond his expertise. In a book of this scope, that’s inevitable. His economic analysis sometimes leaves something to be desired, and occasionally he pursues his sympathetic agenda at the cost of intellectual honesty—but only in small ways. You can’t just accept everything Reader writes, but I don’t think he’d want you to. The story he is telling is too complex to have only one truth, and even this tome doesn’t have space to present every perspective. But Reader does give you a story that is fresh and compelling, an analysis of humanity’s relationship to Africa which takes you pretty damn close to the heart of what it means to be human.

This is a really quick read - probably just about 100 pages. It's Elie Wiesel's first-hand account of his childhood in Nazi concentration camps.

Twisted mystery set in turn of the 20th century. Read it in two days. Three times.

This author is very good at creating an exciting plot, and hot alpha male characters. Her main guy, John was really fun to read, and I liked him immediately. Her female lead character, Suzanne, was just a little to quick to comply with everything John wanted, but somehow the author made it work. I pretty much loved everything about this story except that it was about 100 pages too short and the bad plot twist at the end that didnt work for me. The plot twist she created concerning the decision made by the female lead character didnt seem realistic to me, and so only recieved 4 stars. I felt that the plot twist was a devise used to end her book . Ms. Rice used her clever writing skills to fix it, but it made the ending anti-climactic for me. Like she only had a few pages in which to finish the story. I was still trying to work out in my head the implausibility of Suzanne's decision to choose a life without everyone she knew and loved just to testify against a mob boss. Her parents? Her future husband? With barely a thought? For some "higher" moral ideal? Not. It was beyond belief for me. If there had been more pages in which to write, Suzanne could have chosen to go with her man, and they could have worked out details later. Creating a more fulfilling book. Still, overall it was well written and I would recommend this book if you love hot alpha male characters, and a sexy ride.
