Wow! I haven't seen this new cover! I read this in college and am going to teach it this year in my 10th grade class. I think this is going to be awesome--I'll let you know how my students feel about the subject later... This book is a beautiful, painful, ultimately enlightening journey to the heart of Tayo, an American Indian who has returned to the res after serving in WWII without fanfare. Leslie Marmon Silko is a Goddess-Shaman. Her writing works on so many levels at once--she infuses poetry into her prose bringing us back to ourselves in ways we thought we had successfully forgotten.

A group of individuals come together in post 9/11 Afghanistan. While The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns will continue to be more popular novels about Afghanistan, and they are both great stories, they are a little too neatly tied up and predictable. The Wasted Vigil is not an easy book to read - I found myself having to go back and re-read sections that went over my head the first time - but it really stuck with me long after I finished it. All the characters in the book were profoundly affected and shaped by the reality and brutality of Afghanistan during periods in recent history - the Soviet invasion, the Taliban rule, and the American invasion. What happens when they do come together is tragic and beautiful.

The best series going in modern high fantasy (keep in mind I haven't read much modern high fantasy). Seriously, this book/series is quite good for what it is. It's loosely based/inspired by a number of medieval conflicts/power struggles, most namely being the Dance of the Dragons and the Wars of the Roses. George RR Martin has affirmed his love of medieval history and has said certain historical events have inspired his stories, but that he is most certainly not slavishly copying old stories and simply adding new names and places. From what I can tell, this seems to be the truth. Even if he were, though, would that make the books worse? The Song of Ice and Fire series is full of political intrigue. The characters are unscrupulous, cunning, deceptive, quite Machiavellian. Quite believable. They are neither good, nor bad and just when you become attached to a specific person...

Once I was into the story, I had a constant desire to run while reading the book. Because I would most likely trip on my face, I didn't. But, immediately after reading I was eager and practically bouncing off my seat to go for a jog! Loved it! This is not to much a How To book on proper running but an interesting story tracing back to how nature intended us to use our bodies. Great book, a must read if you love to jog/run!

Darwyn Cooke worked as an artist on Batman: The Animated Series, so if his style seems familiar, now you know. Anyway, Cooke is doing amazing work here. I've never seen anyone else in comics try to pull what he's pulling, the way he's juggling an ensemble cast divided both geographically and chronologically, the way he's creating such a strong sense of the era. It's one of the most cinematic comics I've ever read.
