Even though this a book for young kids, I enjoyed it. This book showed the process on being a leader. Iggy was a brave dinosaur who did his best to protect his herd. It's a must read.

Good book, as were the others by this author. Gladwell is thought-provoking and for me he can put a name to experiences I have had or observed but could not describe.

August Wilson continues his great literacy work as he writes a famous play thats based on a family life called" Fences". The play mainly focuses on an African-American family who lived at the time of struggle in the lives of many African-Americans. Everyone has his or her own family issues, but the issue that this play discusses is extremely unusual. The maxson family life changed quickly in the story. Going from a happy family life to an unhappy family life.

Beautiful. Beautiful and tragic and wonderful. I was hesitant about reading Ainsley's book almost as much as I was looking forward to it. Throughout the whole series he was the character I wanted to know about most, and as we all know there is always that one character whose story we look forward to the most and therefore worry that we will be let down when we finally get it. When I read the synopsis for his story I was doubly worried since it was a married woman for whom he falls and fathers a child with. I shouldn't have been. Ms. Heath tells a beautiful story full of passion and love. Ainsley was a true hero in every sense of the word throughout the whole book. I ached for him and Jayne and their situation, and although I knew the only way for them to achieve happiness was for there to be a tragic loss I still wanted it for them so badly. I was also glad to see the storyline of Leo and Tess wrap up so wonderfully. I wouldn't read this as a stand-a-lone as, in my opinion, you won't get the full impact of the characters and storyline unless you read all three in order. All in all, this was one of my favorite reads so far this year.

Having followed Richard Wiseman's blog for a while now, I had high hopes for this book. However, while it was a reasonably interesting, pleasant read, I wasn't blown away by it either, as it seemed to suffer from some considerable flaws. Firstly, despite promising us examples of all kinds of quirkiness from the world of psychology research, I just didn't find it all that quirky. I felt that some examples, such as the theory that the way to tell if a smile is genuine is to look at the eyes, would already be fairly well-known among the type of people who would be interested in this book. While I appreciate that writing a book about psychological studies that interests the general public may be rather difficult, I also found the book to be incredibly superficial in its handling of its subject matter. Studies were explained very briefly in the most part, followed by sweeping statements about society based on those studies' findings. Usually only one or two studies were used to form these conclusions, which made me wonder whether Richard Wiseman was genuinely justified to do that or whether he was jumping to conclusions at times. There was hardly any critique or analysis of the studies mentioned; there were times when a study was explained in a reasonable-length summary along with its findings, and then followed by one sentence to tell the reader that "however, other researchers have not been able to replicate these findings". Surely it would have been relevant to give the reader some information about these subsequent studies and the reasons why the researchers weren't able to replicate the findings. I also wondered whether the studies quoted actually showed the things he claimed they did. For example, Prof. Wiseman tells us about a study that "showed" the pace of life in various countries based on how quickly the people there walk. I couldn't help wondering whether walking pace really is a good indicator of the pace of life - maybe the population in some countries is generally shorter than in others, which would have an influence on leg length, which would then probably have a bearing on walking speed. This is just one possible alternative explanation that I can think of and my theory may be completely incorrect, but it's exactly these kinds of alternative explanations and critiques that I felt were missing in the book. It was as if Prof. Wiseman liked his interpretation of the findings and was therefore reluctant to propose any other explanations that didn't fit his neat ideas. I found this surprising considering that Prof. Wiseman is, by all accounts, an eminent psychologist and therefore rigorous critique of studies and their findings should be part and parcel of his job (even I learned to do this during my modest A Level in Psychology, so surely a Professor of Psychology would do this too!). The lack of critique also gave me the impression that readers were expected to accept the information in the book on face value, without questioning how appropriate the studies were for researching particular ideas. This, too, struck me as rather ironic, bearing in mind that Richard Wiseman is an outspoken sceptic of anything paranormal and one would therefore expect him to encourage people to question things more. That said, I did find some of the ideas in the book interesting. All in all, I would not discourage anyone interested in this book from reading it, but I would urge them to read it with a critical eye, rather than accepting everything on face value.

Fun stuff from an author new to me. The San Francisco setting is close to home and the characters are quirky. They mystery itself is pretty predicatable but the the overall experience is fine. I read this in pre-pub--the publication date is actually June 2009.

very well-written account of one man's haunted home that spanned both his family's stay there as well as another. this was also featured on discovery channel's "a haunting" series.

Miss Manners manages to be both humorous and informative as she tackles a whole range of etiquette problems from answering machines to 14-course meals. Seeing as it's the size of a dictionary - though much funnier! - it's best read piece by piece in spare moments.

My copy's a paperback. I hadn't remembered the tv show as this funny--but then, I was still quite young when I saw it. I wish that they'd just show the old episodes, rather than try to recreate a magic that was largely chemistry between the actors. Failing that, these novelizations will have to do--and do quite well, really. The ghosts in question can't be said to have 'lives' (because they're dead, I mean), yet they have a daily existence; opinions, learning, growth, ideas. It's quite refreshing, really, since there's a tendency to treat ghosts as nothing more than memories, with no ability to learn and think. The excuse for the journey (which amounts to a honeymoon for Max and 99) is an assassins' seminar. It's sort of a busman's honeymoon, and they don't get a lot of time alone together, because even when they're lost in the mountains, the ghosts are often in earshot. This edition of this book has a sort of mini-catalog of the series on the back. These are, in order: (1) Get Smart (2) Get Smart Once Again (3) Missed It by THAT Much! (4) Max Smart: The Spy Who Went Out into The Cold (5) Sorry, Chief (6) Max Smart And The Perilous Pellets (7) And Loving It! (8) Max Smart Loses Control And, of course, the current volume. If the series continued, I don't know the titles of the later books.

This is the catalogue from an excellent show that just went down today at the Japan Society-featuring portraits from the 13th-16th century in medeival japan. The catalogue chronicles the ways in which chan/zen buddhism used its dharma lineage as the sole focus of almost all socio cultural history throughout the ages and the ways in which painting reflects this special bond between master and student in Zen. It gives excellent insight into Zen's many layers and provides a gorgeous interpretation of what Zen is, which is a fresh departure from the ahistorical coffee table books on Zen that seem to flourish spouting the Zen of you name it. It was a great show, and its also a great read if you missed the show. Interesting to compare the historical works depicting Bodhidharma/Daruma with the newer contemporary works of Daruma done by Takeshi Murakami recently. Breathtaking.
