I enjoyed this book a great deal! While I do not want to be a vegetarian, I do care about my impact on the world and this book really helped me learn about how my food choices impact the animals, the environment, and the workers along the food chain. I had already started shopping at Whole Foods and other stores that make ethics a priority and I have to say I'm more convinced than ever that that is the right thing to do. Within our capitalist democracy, I can vote with my dollars and that often counts more than my vote in elections.

This is fun, Hope and Robert are wonderful honest characters who truly love each other but must slay their own demons to find a life that is worth living. King Charles is amiable - he certainly show the cleverness to be king but one wonders at the side of him shown in this book.

As someone who is considering homeschooling, I found this book very interesting. The issue of "socialization" always comes up in conversations about homeschooling and Gathercole does a good job pointing out the ways that homeschoolers may actually be better (or as adequately) "socialized" than children in traditional school settings. She's pretty repetitive and I ended up skimming over a lot because I felt like I got the point. She also tries to appeal to everyone a little too much. She often says something like, "Of course, I'm not saying that homeschooling is better than traditional schooling..." Really? You're not? Sometimes, I think we're afraid of offending and so we don't present our feelings honestly. If you don't want to read a book about the benefits of homeschooling, then don't read this book. Easy enough. I gave it 4 stars for the handful of points that really affected the way I think about homeschooling. It was a refreshing read on many levels.

** spoiler alert ** By re-reading this story again, I now notice how blah Bill is. I'm glad they don't stay together.

This is my second Robert J. Sawyer book and I have to say he's going to be one of my favorite science fiction writers if all his books are this good. Scientific theories are thrown all around this story and it still has such a human element to the story which makes it a treat. Sawyer really knows how to develop characters so you know them in-and-out and you feel for them. The story is about two extremely smart people, who are friends, and who each develop an amazing technology that are somehow get linked together. Dr. Peter Hobson is the main character and his discovery comes first. He has flashbacks of an organ transplant where he sees the body jerk when opened up. He decides there needs to be a better way to determine when the body is officially dead and creates a better EKG which eventually reads a weird neuron set that leaves the body after death. So people believe this to be the soul and call it the Soul-wave device. And when Peter gets asked by numerous people what life is like after death multiple times his friend decides to help out by copying his brain three times into A.I. form, with a control, and two others who are modified: one who knows it's immortal and one who believes itself is in the afterlife. This all starts of innocently to try and determine if life after death can be detected through the A.I.’s of Peter's brain, but it quickly evolves into something not so innocent. Without giving anything more away, let’s just say it turns into a mystery story and it unfolds as you read along with some nice surprises and a satisfying ending. I really liked this book a lot. There were two interesting ideas with the A.I. and the Soul-wave device, and Sawyer also told a touching simple story of what happened to Dr. Peter Hobson throughout these events. It's a great mix and makes for more than just a science fiction story.

This book begins as Darcy arrives at his Aunt's in Kent and ends at his marriage. At the beginning of the book I was irritated at Darcy. As I read I realized that was the point...so that it is possible to see that he changes. I really enjoyed the book. I was a little disappointed that the author didn't take advantage of a few of the side plots she inserted. It left me wondering... Did she do that so that there is room
