Started to read it right after "Wicked," had to put it down because it sucked. Not as good, but when read with some time having passed between, it, too, was a clever take on an old story. I kind of like the fact that he shows that there really ARE two sides to every story, as well as the fact that he didn't make the supposed "good" original character a total bitch.

I don't know why, maybe it was the buzz, but I had relatively high expectations for this book. I was let down. It's not bad, it's perfectly fine for a light read, but I don't think it's as insightful and provocative as some may claim.

Couldn't finish this book for the following reasons: 1.) Interview style that bordered on schizophrenic (and not just for the subjects being interviewed) 2.) Grew out of 2nd wave of black metal while reading; moved on to more kult, underground stuff you've probably never heard of, poser 3.) Wanted to stab Varg Virkernes after reading the terms of his 16-year prison sentence for murdering Euronymous 4.) Glaring inconsistencies and/or speculation on major events described in the book 5.) Found a 7" copy of the original manuscript, hand-numbered and limited to 500 copies distributed by Peaceville 6.) Too many sheep, not enough wolves, erm--ULVER 7.) All downhill after the churches go up in flames 8.) Second half could've used more stab wounds Seriously, this book is probably worth a laugh, and sheds /some/ light on one of the most controversial (and overblown) scenes in modern music, but I found it very difficult to invest my time or thought into. It just comes across as very sensationalized, and does a better job of building up the phony mystique of black metal genre than it does dispelling rumors or conjecture about what actually took place. Read at your own risk, and with a salt-shaker at your side.
