I read this in the original German (Back in the days when I studied German and was trying to broaden my knowledge) to tie into my study of History as well. You can't really like this book, it's not the kind of book that you like, but you feel compelled to read it for reasons of humanity, or at least that's how I found it. Still fantastic.

S E Hinton is my favorite author. I love all of her books. I think that she was really brave to write about things like this at a time when woman weren't supposed to.

I had no idea what this book was about before reading it. My Grandmother owned it, and while looking through her boxes of books after she passed away, I chose to keep it because I'd heard library school friends mention it. As I read this beautifully written story about a man authoring a biography of his grandmother, I couldn't help but think of this coincidence. I really enjoyed Stegner's book, mostly for the language, but also for the characters and adventures set in the American west. Next, I plan to read "A Victorian Gentlewoman in the Far West" by Mary Hallock Foote, the woman whose life served as inspiration for one of the the characters in "Angle of Repose."

Boy how I wish I had read this first. Let me preface this by saying that I loved the movie and was greatly looking forward to delving into the book that inspired such a fine flick. That being said, the novel basically contains the same interesting characters, intriguing themes, and fun plot twists but lacks nearly all the emotional depth and philosophical/moral quandaries generated in the film. That's right, the movie delivered in the areas where the book is usually king! I believe this book is probably better than the measly two stars I've rated it but, based on admittedly unreasonable expectations, I was completely disappointed and underwhelmed at nearly every turn of the page.

I read this book while it was being workshopped, and I thought it was one of the most dynamic, inventive, moving and fun YAs I'd read in a long time. The opening really grabbed my attention, it was quite unusual, and the rest of the book kept me reading. Need I say it, I'm not a YA, so I think this is quite an achievement. I used to edit YA fiction, and if this had come across my desk in those days, I would've grabbed it and run with it in my hand to the next editorial meeting, shouting, "We got a winner!" Way to go, Suki and Carlyle.

The Wrestler of Philippi had the potential to be a good story. It's set in an exciting time period--the reign of the emperor Nero. It has the plot element of searching for long-lost family members, which is generally interesting. It even had a few scenes that could have been very powerful. However, several flaws spoil the book. I might forgive the cocoa beans, though that is a serious historical error, and I might even forgive the clearly late-Victorian language of the characters, if the characters were characters at all. But they aren't. Nobody in the book is well-developed because the author tries to follow too many different threads, rather than sticking with one story. (Yes, I know Dickens could do that successfully, but few other people can.) Newberry attempts to weave in some biblical characters and events, such as the demon-possessed girl, whom Paul healed; the mesh does not work out though and only adds to the confusion of divergent story lines. The author also goes out of her way to rationalize a miracle, and then produces an ending more unbelievable than any miracle. She fails to evoke any sympathy for her characters, and in the end falls far short of any real dramatic power. Much better historical fiction for young people is out there; skip this one.

Lucid, well laid out, not overwhelming.

Delightful! The Saturdays--with a fascinating cast of characters who choose intriguing ways of spending their combined allowance money of $1.50 to explore New York City. I found this book because The Horn Book recommended it as "One That Got Away" and should have won a Newbery. And well it should. I'm eager to read the rest of the Melendy Quartet.

I reserve the right to modify my rating after book #2. I should never have read this so soon. Based on the ending of book #1 cruel is all I can think.
