This is an Eastern Orthodox commentary on the Sermon on the Mount, mostly as given in the Gospel according to Matthew, but also taking into account parallel passages from other Gospels. It also relies on commentary by the Church Fathers (mostly St. Augustine and St. John Chrysostom). It comments on the Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer among other things. The main theme of the book is the Kingdom of God: what it means and how it is proclaimed; the similarities and differences between the law as preached in the Old and New Testaments; how it affects our lives; and how we seek it, including the pitfalls and temptations we need to avoid. This being an Orthodox commentary, it defends the truth of the Orthodox tradition and stresses that the truth expressed in the Sermon cannot be diluted, watered down or explained away as irrelevant because of differences between the culture of Bible times and ours. It warns against moral laxity, hypocrisy, obsession with material possessions and relativism. The thing which I thought was odd was that, although the author explains and comments on the meaning of many Greek words in the text, the version of the Bible he relies on is almost exclusively the King James Version.

Oh my god depressing. If you ever think about getting married, this is probably not the book to read. Or maybe it is, to take in all the warnings about not marrying for necessity, and instead marrying because the two of you fit like a heavenly puzzle. But even then... D:

I loved it.. one of my favorite reads this summer! Some content is not appropriate for younger middle school students.

I found the premise really interesting--it was a bit dry, however, and I found myself reluctant to pick it back up to read the details once I understood the larger point Logan was trying to make. He did provide some concrete takeaways, which is unusual and appreciated in a business book.

I must qualify my 1 star review. When I first heard about the book, I thought it was going to be an actual story. Instead I realized that it is really more of a series of vignettes. I'm not particulary fond of that style so I gave up after two. They were interesting, I'm just not a vignette kind of girl.

At age 12 or so this book bored me to distraction. I'm pretty sure it had a lot to do with trying to read it at that age, but also never felt too compelled to return to le Carré.

Read this after I read Please Kill Me. Burroughs has a looser grip on language than Hemingway, but the same idea. Sherwood Anderson to Bukowski's Dos Passos, if you will. (punk lit; 200 pages)

What a dreary end! Not to the book, but to a man's life that could have been so much more. I was really down about my life when I read this. I think was a few years younger than Morrison when he died, and the one thing this book did for me was help me to appreciate my life no matter how bad it may suck at the moment, at least I am/was alive.
