Similar to Old Mortality, the story is mainly an excuse to talk about Scottish military history. Not the most exciting topic, and the characters are not that interesting, either. At least there were less speeches filled with indecipherable Scottish dialect.

Good sweet story. Fairly predictable, but a fun read nonetheless. I liked the overall story, hated Rose. Didn't mind the Shakespeare references as much as other reviewers.

This book is a good representation of small-town Ireland. It contains all the stereotypical characters that we've all encountered in real life, and gives an honest portrayal of our attitudes towards them. It also gives an interesting perspective to relationships, showing how the same event can be interpreted very differently by two different people. Despite this, I found this book pretty tough going. The style of writing takes a good while to get used to as it switches back and forth between past and present fairly often. It's also a lot darker than I expected - this is NOT a comedy, despite being written by Ardal O'Hanlon. There were some good points to the book, but I finished it feeling somewhat unsatisfied.

Synopsis From: http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/b/g... Gloriana St. Claire - curvy, stylish, and undead - is spending New Year's Eve alone. And it's all because her boyfriend, Jeremy Blade, is traipsing off to parts unknown to rescue his supposed daughter from the clutches of 'dangerous radicals.' But just as Glory settles in for the evening, a phone call from the bodyguard of a drunk, newly-undead rock star could end her year on a crazy note. The Review: The book opens with Jerry leaving to go chase after his could-be daughter. So yes, it was a noble adventure and all, but why did it have to happen on New Years? What can Glory do, pout? Nope, she’s a big girl and decides to check out a few chick-flicks to pass the night away. Little did Glory know that her protégé would decide, against her advice, that New Years Eve was the night to see for himself if he could drink alcohol with out ill effect. Reality sets in while the two take a boat out on Lake Travis where they are drawn to the siren Aggie who, having angered the Goddess Circe, entraps the two of them into paying her penance by providing three other vampires for ritual sacrifice. As the fourth book in the series, the story just keeps getting better. It throws in just the right amount of humor, quirky banter, and adventure. Glory could be anybody’s best friend. Gerry Bartlett makes you feel like you’re joining up with a group of friends. As long as she keeps putting out the books, I will keep reading them.

my very first Bukowski :) everyone should give ol Hank Chinaski a try - I find that the world can pretty easily be divided into two kinds of women - those who find Buke misogynistic and those who want to go drinking with him. Obviously, I am of the latter. This is the book that got me into Black Sparrow Press, and made City Lights Bookstore a MUST SEE for me the first time i hit San Francisco. oh and p.s. - Bukowski loved women, with all their many flaws. He failed to worship them, and that is just fine with me!

There has been a bit of buzz about Malamud lately mostly due to his daughter’s recently published memoir, My Father Is a Book. Malamud is most often described as the under appreciated, overlooked middle child between the great Jewish-American novelists of the last century, Bellow and Roth. I can’t speak to that claim. The Assistant is one of Malamud’s most acclaimed books and I have had it on my bookshelf for over a year. I can’t really remember why I bought it other than I had heard a bit about the name and thought I would give it a shot. I thought this was a good book mostly because of how well Malamud captures the cultural nuances of New York Jews. The story is of the Bober Family who run a small run-down grocery in a bad neighborhood in what I think is Brooklyn or Queens. They have a daughter who didn’t go to college and works as a secretary to help with the bills. A young hobo type named Frank enters the picture and coaxes Mr. Bober into letting him work at the grocery for next to nothing. Basically, this is a story about miserable people who continually fail. Every opportunity is lost. Good luck doesn’t know where they live. She never heard of them. At one point, the assistant Frank asks the grocer about Jews and suffering. The answer is, “I suffer for you,” but the real answer is “Oi, who should need a reason?” Anyway, the characters are great and fully realized and this makes the book worth while. The major drawback is the very last paragraph of the book which made me shout, “What?!” Take that for what it is worth.

Great book, brilliantly written, and utterly creative. Part Sci fi, part mythology -- I'll grant that this kind of book is not everyone's cup of tea (my one book club wasn't overly fond, to say the least). That said, if you're into reading something fresh, original, and off-beat from an awesome author, this is the book for you.
