A great book to read when you're going through changes or traveling, or just want to sit back and wonder what it's all about. I found it a bit trite, but it's meant to be a simple allegory that's quick and digestible, though not terribly memorable.

Delilah D'Artigo is a half human, half-faerie shapeshifter but because she's half human she doesn't shift into the traditional "were" form of a wolf or a larger cat like a panther but instead into your typical housecat. Her human job is being a private detective so when the leader of the nearby werepuma pack hires her to find out who is killing off the pack's members she takes the case. Whoever is killing off the werepumas is not only killing them but removing their hearts and leaving only a dried husk of a body behind. While this book explored Delilah's charater and her relationship with the FBH Chase, I just didn't find her character to be as interesting or compelling as her sister Camille. I found Delilah to be kind of boring even when she went to find the Autumn Lord to get his help in solving the werepuma case. The werepuma case definitely carries on the story begun in the first book in that it continues the story of Shadow Wing and his demons trying to destroy both Otherworld and Earth. The author definitely leaves ends open to carry the next book told by the third sister Menolly the vampire who I am hoping is a more interesting character. There is also the possibility that Delilah may have been a twin at birth and that she is able to shift into another form because her twin is dead but no one knows for sure--which would have been an interesting plot twist to follow but it was introduced too late in the book to do anything with. Overall, I liked the book but it was just okay in comparison to the first book.

Winesburg, Ohio is a collection of short stories that functions, more or less, as a novel. For cohesiveness it's a lot closer to The Country of Pointed Firs than it is to Slaves of New York; for content its the other way around. Anderson was a lot more of a, uh, euphemist, than Janowitz of course, but there's plenty of sordid, torrid, seamy, and other-word-most-often-found-on-the back-of-a-cheap-paperback going on in this quiet town. And I should add that Winesburg, Ohio blows both of those books out of the water for quality, craft and insight. I remember reading "Sophistication" as a part of my ill-fated high school American Lit. course and not thinking too much about it, which not only illustrates how much I hated high school American Lit. courses, but also how much these stories depend upon one another to really get to you. Hmm. I don't understand it, sometimes a book will inspire an endless stream of questions and commentary from me while others...won't. This has little to do with how much I loved or hated the book, or even if it was just 'OK;' sometimes I'll just finish a book and a reach for the next one. I enjoyed this book. A lot. James Joyce was a big deal influence writing at the same time, sure, but Anderson actually influenced those books that we actually read.

Excellent weaving of characters throughout the novel,Although the age of Eleonora seemed a stretch. Book kept the results very good till the very end. The end kinda makes one wish for a second book. Enjoyable book

** spoiler alert ** A pretty good novel, however the ending with Philippa sleeping with her adopted father was a bit much for me.

this is not the most light-hearted of novels, but it's fantastically written. it portrays a difficult time in the lives of an aging family; it's a time when the roles of parents and children begin to reverse, but everyone is too busy floundering to sort it out. the parents are dealing with new escalating health problems and lifelong anxieties, the children are feeling like failures in their own adult lives, and they are all often unhappiest when they are around each other. the characters are a mess - a complex, interesting, emotionally wrought mess. but the novel deals brilliantly with how a person is formed from family history, from choices they have made and those that are thrust onto them, and how much your perception of the world is tangled up in where you came from. halfway through you're going to want to cancel your trip home for the holidays, but the end is the most realistic and least cheesy resolution of a family crisis that i can remember reading. this is not the waltons. but it's a great book.

The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag by Alan Bradley is the second of the Flavia de Luce mysteries. Like The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, Flavia puts her precocious mind to work to solve the a recent death and an older but mysterious death. It's 1950 and while television is catching on in London, it's only barely reached the villages. It certainly hasn't reached the de Luce family home, not with a father who insists that he and his daughter spend quality time listening to recordings of classic music. Flavia's description of Beethoven's Fifth is hilarious. So when a famous chlidren's television puppeteer and his assistant break down near the village cemetery, Flavia doesn't recognize Rupert Porson. Nor does she gush when he explains who he is and what he does. When his assistant cheerfully exclaims that she's Mother Goose, Flavia's dumbstruck. Flavia continues to be fascinated with death, chemistry and especially poisons. She still has dreams to poison her sisters. Meanwhile they continue to try to convince her that she's adopted. Those, though, who knew the departed Harriet de Luce, tell Flavia that she's the spitting image inside and out of her mother. I found the book to be an excellent follow up. I plan to continue with the series.

Excellent book!! This book starts out with a bang. Little 7 year old Davey is being sexually abused by his step-father and when he dares to tell his mother, she is murdered right in front of him, and he is told that it is all his fault. He becomes what is referred to as a selective mute and when his step-father takes him to a new town and a new school, he does not get along. He is placed into a specialized Center for disturbed kids where he comes into contact with Cecilia, and art therapist. Through his drawings Celia comes to the horrifying realization that Davey is in terrible danger. When Chet, Davey's step-father feels threatened by Cecilia he comes after her. The last 100 pages of the book are a non-stop thrill ride and the ending is heart wrenching. Overall a great read and I plan to pick up other books by this author soon.

This is one amazing book. i would have to say that it is better than the first two put together. with finding two brand new half-bloods and having to stop a Titan War, Percy and his friends have their work cut out for them. Friendship, love, hate, and revenge are just some of the themes that Rick Riordan manages to pack into this book. Riordan focuses on the main character while incorporating the lives of minor characters into the main character's life. everyone's "drama" connects in some way which, in turn, adds to the general drama/conflict of the story. Speaking of conflict....the goddess Artemis has been captured and the heroes have to go save her. No problem huh? Wrong. there are a few "catches". They have until the winter solstice and....there might be this great ancient monster waiting to kill them upon arrival. Rick Riordan is an amazing writer who can pull off mixing action and drama and fantasy with teenage hormones and the power of friendship. the combination of the two gives you a great book worth reading i would recommend this book to anyone who had already read the first two books and to anyone who loves Greek Mythology. this book is a great way to learn more about Greek Mythology and still have fun while reading.

Some interesting biology, some a bit 'overextended', some interesting speculations, some purple prose.
