Well written, fun to read. Lots of little life lessons can be found throughout this book - here's hoping more people learn those lessons without having to go thru life the way Jen did!

First off, everyone insisting that this is lifted from The Giver needs to read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and then you'll see who's lifting who. And Brave New World was written in 1932... I think the themes of being completely controlled by a society and having your emotions controlled are just too general themes in Dystopian novels to say that they are plagiarizing one author or another. On that note, I loved this book! It really grabs your attention, and I cannot wait for the sequel! Dystopian books are really hit or miss for me, but this was a definite hit. As we are drawn into Cassia's world, we began to see what is wrong with her world as she does. I think this presents the dystopia in a new light, as our main character does not initially think anything is wrong with her society. It lets you see how dystopias can seem like the best option.

hilarious and kept my interest from beginning to end...it's always good to see things from a male perspective.

This is one book that actually inspired me in a lasting way. As I was reading it and definitely once I had finished I just wanted to get out on that road and see where it would take me. Unfortunately life isn't the same as it used to be and things don't seem as simple as they read anymore. The pace of this book is exciting and the random stories that come in and out of the tale keeps your predictions darting all over the place. There's a gift with words written on every page that inspires and ignites your senses.

I have just spent the best part of the last 2 weeks reading this, and I'm wondering why I bothered. I had completely the wrong impression of what this book was about, not having heard the story or seen any of the films (apart from Captain Nemo turning up in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen!). I thought that the 20,000 leagues under the sea meant that they literally went down vertically to 20,000 leagues below the surface and there found a land full of fantastical creatures a la Journey to the Centre of the Earth (which I also haven't read). But it was basically a fictional travel guide to the world's oceans written in the 1860s and therefore now out of date. The language (which I understand is a translation) was flowery and at some points consisted of paragraphs of lists of names of various sea plants and animals. The one exciting bit of the book, which I had anticipated for 221 pages before I finally got to it, lasted for approximately one and a third pages! I remember now why I don't read fiction that was written more than 50 years ago. And I think Hollywood has a lot to answer for.

This was one of Sam's favorites. The first time we read it, my kids were so scared of the beastie. Once they knew, they wanted to read it again and again.

a terrible attempt to build on her other two ya-ya books. ya-yas in bloom focuses on the ya-ya kids and is dramatically different from wells's other books - both in style and quality.

I copied this down from the early part of the book: "He was sprinting between the trees now. Shadowlace and bright chains of sun-dapple ran across them in moving mosaics as Roland lengthened his stride."
