This book taught me so much about what it means to be a woman from a physiological perspective. Angier writes in a witty, conversational style - not condescendingly, but in a way that keeps the reader willing to stick with her through some pretty hard-core biological science stuff. Just as importantly, she talks about the psychology of women and how we relate to our bodies and their sometimes mysterious ways. Every woman should read this book (and men who want to know more about what makes women tick under their skins should, too).

What a breath of fresh air! It's not common to find YA SF, let alone an intelligent YA book. I am really excited to get my hands on the next book. Next year seems so far away! Years ago, I read Ender's Saga & the Shadow series. While I LOVED Ender's Game & really liked Ender's Shadow, I was increasingly disappointed as I continued with both series. It's not that they were especially bad, they just didn't have the same punch. Pathfinder has redeemed Card in my eyes. I hated being disappointed with his writing, so I didn't read anything more of his until now. I'm just super glad to be a big fan, again.

Things I Liked: The story kept me reading. It was entertaining and fast-paced and there was plenty of action that happened. The book holds some interesting ideas about the future of our society as well, thoughts about how we would face hunger and other destructive influences. While I think it was a bit (ok, a lot) over the top, still it provided some food for thought. Things I Didn't Like: Really, the only thing that kept me reading was the action. The characters seemed really underdeveloped, especially minor characters - his mother, his friend, even the girl he meets. It seemed like just the bare bones of a story idea with not much else developed around it. I probably wouldn't have finished it if it wasn't so short and easy to read. The writing felt stilted in places, particularly the dialog. There are other things about it that bother me, but I don't think I'm articulate enough to explain them. I can see how it will work for other people, but it really didn't work for me. Full review at One Librarian's Book Reviews.

This is not the type of book you just read. It's a study of Buddhist philosophy and a shifting of how one perceives the inherent struggles that make up life. Chondron's anecdotes are helpful, and her exercises worked for me. I am not a meditator per say, but I do look for inner peace particularly while walking, and have practiced the breathing exercises as mentioned in this book. Here is what I remember and take away with me from this reading: Pain and suffering are a part of life and it is our choice how we wish to deal with these things. Confronting pain allows you to gain control of it. Running or hiding from it or denying it only ascertains that it will be there with you always. Our pain is not solely our pain, but is part of a greater collective. Everyone suffers, so with that understanding, we can identify and empathize with the pain of others. What we fear and what hurts us, is the same for all. When something or someone hurts us, use your breath to take that pain in and transform it into open space, or into the collective positive energy. Breath in the anger, or the pain, breath out calm. In this way, we can change our own state of existence and possibly the way of others.

This was a good book, it showed how kids can make imaginary play fun even in junior high in 6th and 7th grade!

I love Margaret Atwood but now I remember why I stopped reading her novels in the late 90's. They just are not good for my mental health, the whole dark aura of the book invades my life. This means the book is excellent & does its job. But it's painful. I'm looking forward to reading some other people's reviews on Goodreads. Even though this book seems like a thriller, it's really about the main character's inner world and her relationship with her body. I'm not sure I comprehended some of the themes. When I finished the book, I was left with this message: eat your peas, there are kids starving in India. Or, well, life sucks but it could always be worse. And that philosophy leads me right to a dead end. Rennie struggles with her partial mastectomy in the beginning of the book, but, after being exposed to true bodily horrors on a remote island, she seems to have some "better" perspective. Is Margaret Atwood basically saying, "Buck up! It could be worse! Quit your whining!" ?? It's a good perspective to remember, but it's all about keeping it in balance.
