Just starting this. Although Clements writes "kids' books" I find them fun and his understanding of kids'sensibilities is quite astonishing. OK, finished this. Not as good as some of his other books (Frindle, for example) but still fun.

I had no idea this was part of a series. It stood alone quite well. I loved the author after just the first 10 pages. It was different than expected, which made me like it all the more. It had just a touch of naughtiness and a ton of romance.

Favorite Quotes: In most books, the I, or first person, is omitted; in this it will be retained; that, in respect to egotism, is the main difference. We commonly do not remember that it is, after all, always the first person speaking. I should not talk so much about myself if there were anybody else whom I knew as well. One farmer says to me, ‘You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make bones with…walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle. [I:]t would be well, perhaps, if we were to spend more of our days and nights without any obstruction between us and the celestial bodies… [image error] While civilization has been improving our houses, it has not equally improved the men who are to inhabit them. [F:]or a man is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. [M:]aking the earth say beans instead of grass – this was my daily work. The universe is wider than our views of it. The commonest sense is the sense of men asleep…

Wow! This is the best book of the series in my opinion. Allie can't seems to stay out of trouble and this time, it is not something she can deal with it magically. I love everyone in this book and I kind of respect Allie. There is an introduction of a new character, Eli Collins and I can't seem to shake off some feeling that he and Allie had a past... Hmm.. hopefully the next book will reveal more!

Andreas Merrick is the king of London's dark underworld, having amassed unimaginable wealth and power...and a fierce reputation that leaves even the bravest men quaking in their boots. Yet one person is maddeningly unintimidated by his fearsome presence: the persistent Miss Phoebe Pace. Equal parts honey and steel, Phoebe will stop at nothing to find her missing brother and save her family. Though associating with Andreas means peril and scandal, she never expects to experience a passion so intense that it threatens to consume her. But enigmatic Andreas is no ordinary man to love. He brings dangers from all sides -- without and within -- while tempting her beyond her wildest dreams... I love Andreas! He's such a great hero: tortured, aloof, curt, intimidating man, and yet he's scared to death of Phoebe - a woman that represents happiness, sunshine, everything good. His childhood was horrific, and it influenced him deeply. (view spoiler) Now that his brother Roman is happily married, he feels the loneliness even more. But above all things his belief that he is a bad man is the thing that draws most attention. He simply won't let himself believe that he is redeemable. Luckily for him Phoebe doesn't give up. Phoebe is a marvelous heroine who totally deserves Andreas. She's a good person whose life has been spiraling out of control lately. And yet she still doesn't give in. And she's incredibly stubborn. I like the way she didn't take no for an answer, she simply did everything she could to make Andreas notice her and fall for her. I like the whole theme of a criminal mastermind falling for a lady. Seeing how this is pure fiction, stuff like that can happen, in RL of course nothing would be as easy. But in here it worked. We get to see more of Roman - I liked him in his book One Night Is Never Enough. What I find interesting is the relationship between Roman and Andreas. They're complete opposites, but they still get along splendidly and call themselves brothers. Some of the quotes I liked are included below. Rating: 5 stars

This is a very complex fantasy tale that actuall draws on a wealth of cultures as the basis of the various cultures in the story. The complexity makes it engaging, but in the end, it is fantasy and the constant struggle against evil using the power of the 'true source' gets tiring. This was another guilty pleasure for me during high school and college. I have the latest (or next to latest perhaps?) book on my shelf. It's been there for 2 years now and I haven't cracked it open yet.

I haven't read any other biographies of Booker T. Washington; so I can't compare Up From History to them. Unto itself, Up From History puts Washington's life into the context of his place and time. It portrays him as a man who tried to do what he could for his people against incredible odds. He worked in a constructive, positive way in the face of monumental hatred and ignorance. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century American history.

Tough one. I dreaded reading this book. I didn't want to explore the feeling of a father who had lost his daughter to a serial killer. What I found, though, was I was detached from the emotional aspect of it because, quite frankly, I don't think the author is a very good story teller. I found myself shifting into editor's mode, second guessing his structure and frustrated over missed opportunities (come on, the girl's death can in no way be blamed on her father? Don't you think guilt would be a primary obstacle to ultimate healing? The cops are warm and fuzzy? His wife is perfect, understanding and compassionate?) In short it missed all the messiness that being human brings to a story. That said, the book really took off for me in the discussions and exploration of the nature of God and the Holy Trinity. What rang truest to me was Mack's self conviction when it was pointed out he didn't tell his wife he was returning to The Shack ... thus, denying her the chance of a powerful encounter with God ... and pointing out his inability to handle her emotions. Such potential, but so many missed opportunities. This story could have been so much more powerful in the hands of a more skilled writer/story teller.
