I found this the least impressive book of Carey's. The story failed to intrigue. The scenarios felt forced and the setting itself lacked the familiarity and beauty of his other works. Perhaps the non-Australian setting had something to do with this. I have always relished the startling shifts in "voice" from Carey novel to Carey novel. The voice here was bland and non-descript.

This is a 3.5-4 ish for me. Not much substance but oh, so much fun to read--like superheroes for girls. We sat around yesterday at work joking about what we would want our Grace to be. I think "farting" might be a fun grace but in the end, I think I'd want super hearing.

Katie Stewart has crafted a wonderful tale of a sensitive young boy who is new to town. James has joined a footy team and is being picked on by some of the other bigger and more aggressive players. He feigns illness one Saturday morning to get out of a game. His mom is not fooled and sends him next door to deliver a book to Mack, a grandfatherly nutty professor type who invents games. Mack has recently begun to use modern technology and invents a game just for James. But this is no video game. In this game James is transported to another place and time and becomes a real-life hero who must use his wits and overcome his insecurities and fears to save the day. The Dragon Box is a modern fable, delightfully imagined and well written, with subtle meaning incorporated into the story. It was a delightful antidote to X-Box; exactly the type of book one would encourage their young children to read. It seemed just right for the age group to which it was targeted, but a good read for any age. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is worth noting here that the exquisite cover was illustrated and designed by the author.

It's rare when I sit down and read a book in one sitting, but with every Griffin and Sabine book, that's what happens. I love Bantock's writing style. Totally pulls me in and little trinkets like love note and photos, to look at thru out the book. Brillant.

It is a textbook; how much am I supposed to like it? #1: It is way to freaking expensive! It should be half the damned price it was. And, sadly, there was a 9th ed. just out when we got this but that would've been even more expensive. Anyway, we read about 4/5th of this book before we moved on to other grammar topics (TG) so I am counting it as read. Looking back through the index I think I will go ahead and finish the rest, also, as it could be useful. I think it was a fairly effective text for standard grammar and Reed-Kellogg diagramming, but, honestly, I haven't read/used any other grammar texts so I have no standard of comparison.

I read this in high school. Now, I'm not going to say that I know all about Tao philiospohy because I read this book, but it was easy to read and I felt a decent intro.

I've been horrified by the happenings in Sierra Leone since I discovered the facts in the mid 90s. I purchased this book in 2007 and finally picked it up to read in March 2011 (shameful). As a mother, I had a hard time stomaching this child's life...but as a human being, I wept and prayed for peace in this country and others in Africa. Thanks for sharing your pain and giving us hope through your eyes.

What a wonderful book. This story specifically covers a period of about four hours directly after the marriage of Edward and Florence in 1961, but spans out in every direction to also embrace the family, childhood, teen years, aspirations, humiliations and secrets of the two. I can't really say more than this but would strongly recommend this gentle but very strong novel - it left me feeling so sad for the characters but also for my own life, as it may for many: McEwan's main message is that doing nothing is as muscularly decisive as making bold choices - and can be just as poisonous. Although the time setting of this novel - the intersting cusp between the austere 50s and the permissive 60s - plays a large part in the situation and attitudes of Edward and Florence, this novel looks at two characters who more generally reflect humans and the more regrettable side of human nature.
