I generally enjoy this type of book for bedtime reading; nothing too heavy, maybe some light humor. This book isn't bad -- it's just silly, without any humorous relief.

I've read the best seller; now I'm reading the YA version for my adolescent lit class. It's about the same, only shorter. I don't think it's the best written book around, but I like what we learn about the people and the culture.

I love this book. It is modern fairy tales. Some are emotionally intense. All are funny. My favorite I think is the one about the girls one with the hand of fire and the other with a hand of ice. If you haven't read Aimee Bender, all I can say is, you should.

Actually, I really enjoyed this crazy suspense/sci-fi/mystery/I don't even know. If you like to look for weird connections and try to somehow solve puzzles that might not even have solutions then I recommend this. At the very least, it's intriguing. At the best, it's about finding your way home. Or out of your home, whatev.

Ha, this book was great. Everything you ever heard is confirmed. An amazing life. The book is written lightly and it flies by. His all black rooms and him having sex in salvador dali's house were highlights.

A wonderful historical novel, that puts the Salem witch trials in a whole new light. The best aspect of this novel is the character of the protaganist Susanna. Through her character the themes of courage, guilt,and sympathy are brought in to make the plot enticing.

I read Powers' Goldbug Variations in summer of '01 and loved it. Why has it taken me so long to return to him? While not quite as virtuosic as performance as Goldbug Variations, still a fascinating read. Powers has a way of combining his scary knowledge of seemingly everything (in this case photography and WWI) into engaging reads with charcters you care about. I read this right after auditing part of a seminar Rebecca Schneider was teaching on Theatricality, Photography, and Performance and so I especially appreciated the snippets of Benjamin and Barthes Powers worked into the novel. That said, there were some sections that seemed a little too much like a history text and overall it was not quite as seemless as Goldbug. I would start there. But overall highly recommended.
