My school recently did a production on this book and although I didn't see it, I would have thought it was great. Hating Alison Ashley is a old but well loved book (well here in Australia it is) and I feel that I really should read this sometime. Hating Alison Ashley is about a girl called Erica Yurken. She knew that she was intelligent and everyone loved her. And she knows that she is superior to everyone at the ill-famed Baringa East Primary School. That is, until she meets Alison Ashley, a new girl in her class. As soon as Erica looks at Alison, she utterly hates and and that soon leads to competition between the two, and only one can be on top. If I had to compare the character of Erica to someone, it would be Rachael Berry. At least, an eleven year old version of her. Erica lives in the poor suburbs with her mother and siblings. Erica is "born to be on stage" and is very competitive, she loves to be the best. She can also be a show-off and nosy. But she was a likable character and you did feel sorry for her during the book. Alison Ashley, on the other hand, is the opposite of Erica. She lives in the rich suburbs and is "perfect." She's good at class, all the teachers and students love her and according to Erica, she is a snob. But you soon realise that Erica is overly exaggerating Ashley's personality and we find out that she isn't snobby at all. In fact, she has family issues and is very shy and modest. I also did love all of the supporting characters. I think we all had a primary school teacher like Mrs Belmont, who does remind me of my aunty (who is actually a teacher who teaches middle-school grades.) But my favourite character of all was Barry. He wasn't exactly a bully, just a little shit in class. This book was such a cute read! If I read this back when I was 10 or 11, I would have enjoyed it more that I would have. The story is really cute and there were some parts during the book that made me laugh out loud (especially Drama Night.) I loved the competition between Erica and Alison (well... really Erica.) It did take me back to when I was that age and when I was reading the book, I had too picture myself as 11-year-old Alyssa. This book was also short so I just flew through it. I also especially loved all of the Australian cultural things that were thrown in it. It's been a while since I've read an Aussie book. Overall, a really fun, light read. I might recommend this to my younger cousin and some of my friend's little sisters. I think that they might enjoy it. Rating: 4/5
