I was not really a fan of studying history until I got to seminary and took my History of Christianity classes and then I started to love it. I was fascinated with certain time periods, and the time of Henry VIII was one of my favorites to study. And I've been intrigued since then with all the TV shows, movies and books that cover that time period-even when it's turned into fiction, like this novel. It was easy for me to get into this book. I love the short chapters and alternating view points of the 3 women. I love the character development of Anne of Cleves-the only character of the book that I really liked. I love that in parts the writer was able to make me like Jane Boleyn and feel sorry for her, when in truth she was a horrible woman. I hated Katherine from the first of her chapters until the end, but did feel a little bit of pity for her at times. I was incredibly frustrated throughout most of this book with how it is that a country allowed Henry, when he was clearly insane, to continue to reign, and to accept as "God's will" the thousands of people he displaced or killed to suit his own desires. Basically I really enjoyed this book, and it makes me want to pull out my old notebooks from school and look back over my notes on all of these people.

I repotted all my plants yesterday on the sunny porch. I have two hanging pots, one full of greens, the other ready to sprout a handful of herbs. I took this book out in anticipation of their growth. The recipes spoke to me with intense earthy notes, with an abundance of fresh herbs to tame the summer heat. I can only wait so much longer for the warm breeze. Delicious.

Amazingly powerful, I couldn't put it down. Set in a apocalyptic future, the disaster isn't spelled out, but seems to be post-nuclear war. A father and son (unnamed) are traveling "the road". Somehow, it all rings eerily true.

I remember absolutely loving this book when I was younger. Now that I have read it to Carter, I didn't love it as much, but I am also MUCH older and in a totally different part of my life. I think it was probably one of the first fantasy/science fiction book I had read when I was little and I was fascinated with it. It was really good going back and reading it though because I had forgotten what it was all about. Carter did not enjoy it at first because it moves slowly. But now that we are done, he has asked if we can read the next book. I can't wait to start that one with him too because I have no clue what that one is about. I just can't remember that long ago!

Blech. I find this style of "imposter" nonfiction tasteless. In Nickel and Dimed, Ehrenreich pretends to be a minimum wage worker. She tricks and condescends to her coworkers in a variety of minimum wage jobs, and after she has tolerated enough (usually only a matter of weeks), pulls the rug out from under her new friends and confidants by admitting that, Surprise! She's really a comfortably middle-class author with health insurance and an advance, one would assume, for this book. Offensive and silly. Makes you feel for the people she leaves behind in the trenches.
