I'd go as far as saying that this is the 3rd best novel in the series so far, after "The Player of Games" and "Use of Weapons" in that order. I was blown away by the quality of the story, the interesting and well-developed characters, and the sheer scale of the novel. Four stars, highly recommended. but if you haven't read Culture novels before, I recommend just starting at the beginning. "Consider Phlebas" is still the weakest novel in the series, but it is the first one and sort of a rite of passage. After that, it's nothing but excellence. If you're into science fiction at all, these are must-reads.

I read this in less than a day, and it was my favorite so far of the "Cat who..." books. I really enjoyed it. I'm about to start on the next...

Hilarious. Unexpected (sometimes hilariously unforseen) turns in every chapter. Jeeves just makes you smile :)

Take some vampire novels, mix it with a little Harry Potter and throw in some Native American legends and you have these books. Yes, it is yet another YA series about Vampires, but it's still pretty good.

Aimed at teens, and again with the whiny-people-with-trivial-problems problem occasionally (Ellen Kushner's "Charis," especially). But tons of wonderful stories. Best stories: Neil Gaiman's "Chivalry" (about an old woman who finds the Holy Grail at a secondhand store) Susan Palwick's "Jo's Hair" (about what happens to Jo March's hair when she sells it) Harry Turtledove's "Not All Wolves" (about a boy werewolf escaping into the Jews' quarter) Andy Duncan, "Liza and the Crazy Water Man" (not so much for the fantasy element, which is negligible, but for the marvelous evocation of the early days of radio and mountain music) Ursula LeGuin's "The Bones of the Earth" (about stopping the earthquake, and fathers, and teachers) Sherwood Smith's "Mom and Dad on the Home Front" (about what the parents do while the kids are saving the other world) Orson Scott Card's "Hatrack River" (about the night Alvin was born, and I'm sure I've read it in one of the novels).

The thing I remember most about this book is a teacher trying to teach me what a flat character is. (It's a character in a story that does not undergo any sort of change or development.) So to get me to remember the flat part, she always refered to Giles Corey, who is a flat character in this story both literally and figuatively as Giles was pressed to death by rocks.

A review for The Romance Reviews. TEMPTATION ISLAND is a hot erotic romance that brings on the heat, and not just because it's set in Hawaii. Ric wants to save his family plantation in Hawaii by turning it into a bed and breakfast, but he needs some financing to get the project off the ground. His long lost and insanely rich grandmother is just the ticket. When she tells him that she will be in Hawaii soon to meet him, he thinks he may be able to convince her to give him the money. Well, imagine his surprise when it's not his grandmother who meets him but Jenny, a beautiful young woman from a small Minnesota town who was sent in his grandmother's place. He's supposed to be convincing her that his bed and breakfast is a worthwhile project, not getting her in bed, but there's something about her that makes him want Jenny so badly. And when Jenny and Ric give into their passion, they begin an erotic adventure that will change their lives. This story was so cute. I loved Jenny. She was very fresh, real, and had a wide-eyed innocence about the world that was unusual to read about. She is in such a contrast to Ric who lived a hard life and was jaded. The plot was fun and light and moved along quickly. Before I knew it, I was at the end of the story and I didn't realize I had been reading for so long. Jenny and Ric had a chemistry that was palpable from the moment they met. Even though they both thought it was not in their best interests, but they just couldn't stay away from each other. They were incredibly hot together. And Lorie O'Clare really knows how to bring on the steam when writing a sex scene. TEMPTATION ISLAND has great characters, a fun plot and some super sizzlin' scenes. I was reading this during an extremely rainy weekend, and I was instantly transported to the sun and sand of Hawaii. I was so sad when it was over and I had to come back to my east coast rain. But it was extremely fun while it lasted!

Gritty crime novel. Like Law and Order without the FCC.

Considering the buzz that our earth is being depleted on a daily basis and the food shortages are bound to happen this is a good opportunity to start growing some of our own foods. It doesn't take much room to plant a fruit tree or a patch of berries but it does take some knowledge and gentle care. Karen Szklany Gault has given us the opportunity to start our own gardens and "grow local." In the beginning of the book she explains the regions and what plants are conducive to those areas. I was specifically interested in container growing because of the soil conditions in the part of Texas we live in and our property laden with huge trees. I did find that I can still grow berries and fruits regardless of those conditions. This book is a great resource for a beginner. It covers soil conditions and supplementation, pollution, cultivation, planting, pests, diseases, and harvesting. Gault also includes some great looking recipes to use with our rewards. She also provides resources if you aren't able to get some of the items you need locally. I recommend this book for those that want to learn more about growing their own fruits and berries or those that have embarked on this thought and need additional information. You will not only be led through the process but you will gain an abundance of knowledge.

Pes ettim.
