This is classic Ayn Rand, one of my favorite books that I could re-read every 5 years or so. Yes it's long and big on her theoretical philosophy of objectivism but it's an inspiring read and I view it as a challenge to individuals to reach their full potential from an intellectual standpoint, despite the trappings of emotions and non-linear reality of life and societal pressures. This is easier said than done and very fitting to the industrial revolution age in which the book takes place. As with any theoretical philosophy, you need to maintain an open mind and not take it to a negative place.

Must admit I felt sad when I finished 1984. There is a sense of truth and realism. Looked up on wikipedia the number of songs, albums, stories influenced by this story. Nationalism, continuous war, sexual repression, surveillance, and so on--this futurology has an inescableness. At the end, when one is resigned to its eventuality and conversion, one can not escape feeling a sense of loss. Perhaps, it is because it goes against many of the Hero's journey, which comprises the majority of stories told, still. It is disheartening. We hold on with hope that the hero will triumph. In a morbid sense, at the end, it may have been a converted, brainwashed victory, still. . . At times, it was hard to grasp this stark description of this fiction/ truth world. DOublespeak, vocabulary A/B/C. It brings up images of post war Europe, CNN reality of the 24/7 news cycle, and the dumbing down of society. Where pittance is a way of life. The interpretation of the reasoning of this world reminds me of the post-apocalyptic world of the Matrix with that sense of hope. Still, I am glad finished 1984. We need to take the mountains and valleys of life to feel balance. In order to change the world, 1984 has a way of challenging this mindset. Are you up to the challenge? we'll see.

This book was a fun, fast read. I liked it because it was a collection of short stories, but they were all about the same group of boys and would connect to each other sometimes. The characters in the books are all interesting and different. Plus, I think it's fun to see how the boys interact with each other; Brinley does a good job with this. Warnings: One or two swear wards, a little violence (nothing graphic), and lots of sneaky pranks and schemes.

3.5 stars You may have noticed by now that I am a sucker for a medieval mystery. This was a fun read, and the first book in the last few I've picked up that I actually finished. It was very interesting to learn about the occupation of the hangman, and see how he was necessary to the town, but also feared and shunned. I will probably check out the next book in this series.

Man, it took me FOREVER to get through this one (one week due to surgery)! I did enjoy it more than I originally thought I would, but it was definitely not one of my favorites in the series thus far. Like others have said, it was severly lacking in the romance department, which was what I liked least about it. What made up for this though was all the subplots going on involving JM, Blay, and Quinn, Lash, the Lessening Society, the war in general, etc. I can't wait to keep reading the series and see what happens from here! Starts Rehv's book today :-)
