I know lots of people think this book is amazing so I will have to try again, but I didn't get very far before I had to take it back to the library (can't renew). I'm not a history buff, so it is not an easy read for me.

A collection of essays from the last 30 years that inspire me during my morning commute to stand up to Power and Wealth and fight for Liberty. Then I show up at work and answer phones and make copies. Awesome. Now that I finished it, I can say that I love Howard Zinn more than I did before reading this book (which was a lot). I particularly like this quote from his essay "The Problem is Civil Disobedience": It's a strange thing, we think that the law brings order. Law doesn't. How do we know that law does not bring order? Look around us. We live under the rule of law. Notice how much order we have? People say we have to worry about civil disobedience because it will lead to anarchy. Take a look at the present world in which the rule of law obtains. This is the closest to what is called anarchy in the popular mind--confusion, chaos, international banditry. The only order that is really worth anything does not come through the enforcement of law, it comes through the establishment of a society which is just and in which harmonious relationships are established and in which you need a minimum of regulation to create decent sets of arrangements among people. But the order based on law and the force of law is the order of the totalitarian state, and it inevitably leads either to total injustice or to rebellion--eventually, in other words, to very great disorder. I also learned a lot about the First Amendment, which I knew embarrassingly little about before. It's funny that we all take "free speech" idea so literally, because the way the First Amendment has been interpreted has to do with the government's inability to prevent you from saying things, and little to do with protecting you once you've said things. Because the way it is, once you've said things, all bets are off. Good to know. Anyway, I'd definitely recommend this if you're looking for a little pick-me-up. Most of the essays are transcripts from speeches Zinn gave so they are extremely readable and go pretty quickly.

In 1982 this book sent me into a real spiral of anxiety.

SPOILER ALERT! I absolutely loved this book. I found irony in the idea of a sex theropist summoning a love slave she refuses to use. Julian's character was amazing. The best main hero you could possibly have; hot, muscular body, high intelligence, loving and loyal. The historical detail Sherrilyn Kenyon uses on all of her books is dizzying. Making sure to an -nth degree that her books are, if not historically correct, than at least historically acurate.

Children are so selfish, they generally can't even appreciate the lesson in a book about selfishness. But this book was so subtle and perfect, it made me CRY when I was a child. I would be willing to hypothesize that it had a large hand in shaping my personality. The story is simple- so you read your own experiences into it. Perhaps that's what makes it so good; what you get out of it is a reflection of yourself. That's why I think this book is also about forgiveness. I wish I had not given any other books 5-star ratings, just so that I could rate this book on a platform of its own.

This is a beautiful book about love - what it is to different people and what it means in the deepest sense. A perfect book for any hopeless romantic :-)

** spoiler alert ** Another fun book in the Fablehaven series. Other than a slow start, Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary kept me engaged throughout. I think Mull has improved as an author as the series has gone on. Although I gave it four stars, I do have a complaint. I didn't think about it until after I had finished the book, but in my opinion several significant plot elements in Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary feel too similar to events from the last two books in the series. For example, the journey through the Dragon Sanctuary is similar in theme to the journey through Lost Mesa in book 3, and we've already seen the betrayal of an important and seemingly trustworthy character earlier in the series, as well. Really the general plot of the entire series is also a bit unimaginative: recover magical artifacts before the bad guys do so they can't unleash a horrible evil into the land. I wish Mull had been more creative with the plot, because I like a lot of his characters, creatures, and settings. Fortunately, the story was enjoyable enough for me that I didn't think about any of these things until after I was finished, and I doubt it would bother the intended young adult audience.

Elsa Gidlow is an honored feminist poet, a philosophical anarchist and a Taoist bon vivant. This is her radical and loving story. The triumph over long poverty, lack of education, and family tragedy; her joy as a word weaver and as an irrepressible free spirit, free heart. Her survival of terrifying Abuse wrapped in psychology covers. TRIBUTE TO SUCESS. In 1921 Elsa Gidlow wrote the first openly Lesbian Literature in the United states. Gidlow kept her sanity and wrote all her beautiful poetry in spite of the fact that she was incarcerated in a mental institution because she declared openly that she was a lesbian. There, she received uncounted applications of electroshock therapy to "convert" her to heterosexuality. A lot of the circuits in her brain were wounded by this barbaric treatment, but she always knew who she was, and that she loved women. They never took the fire out of her heart, so we are fortunate to have her mighty words to inform us about her true self.

Enjoyable quick read... the characters grew up in Naperville, Indiana, the author grew up in Naperville coincidence? I think not :) Can't wait to go see the movie first weekend in May!
