Cagatay San cagataysan — I just finished reading The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay which was recommended to me by JK in our little cross country virtual book club. Divided into three parts, this is a story of a boy named Peekay coming of age in 1930-1950's South Africa. So, we've got major historical things happening - Boer War aftermath, Hitler Germany and WWII, the buddings of Apartheid. And then you have this really small boy going through hell at age 5 in a boarding school and learning at this infant stage in life how to survive. His power grows with each new and colorful mentor that he (and we) meets along the way. "First with the head and then with the heart," is his mantra throughout the story. There is little I love more than a good piece of fiction with brilliant and richly described narrative. I just found that a movie was made about the book in 1992... I'm definitely interested in checking it out but I don't want to ruin the absoloodle perfection of this story so I may skip it.

Ander Duque _nderduque — I enjoyed this one as much as I thought I would. Dick taking up the mantle of the Bat made much more sense than Azrael doing so, and to read about his struggle with all that - being Batman, not being Robin, not-quite being Nightwing - was really interesting. His confrontation with Two-Face was a nice touch, but the best thing about this really is the ending, plus the talk between Dick and Bruce. I've really taken quite the liking to these characters. (This is an understatement.) Added after the 3rd read: Yes, this is trés melodramatic. Yes, the art is questionable at times. Yes, Dick has his ponytail. But despite all this, Prodigal remains one of my favorites. It's a must-read for everyone who likes Dick Grayson, and his dynamic with both Tim and Bruce are to die for.

Zack Anderson thezackanderson — Alright, so this book is about a hunter (obv.) and he's out in some crazy jungle with all sorts of animals. The book is kind of boring at first, just basically counting up all the animals, no big deal. But as we get to the end, we count up ALL the animals, and realize that this hunter is in the wrong hood! He breaks right out of there like the chump he is. I hit this one with 3 stars though, because that initial bit felt like it was going nowhere.
