Chen Yang yc89731cb5 — I admit that I'm surprised by how much I liked this book - I was expecting, as an active Mormon, to be more upset by Krakauer's depiction of my faith. But I didn't really feel like Krakauer was aiming to paint a picture of my faith, or at least not of mainstream Mormonism as it's practiced today - he was out to paint a picture of radical Mormon fundamentalism, and how it got to where it is. And the history in the book is good - yeah, Joseph Smith and Brigham Young taught some weird, messed up things. The modern church has eschewed many of these more esoteric (and racist... and violent...) teachings, but it doesn't change the fact that they were once taught, and that many people still cling to them. And many of those who cling to them are drawn to the fundamentalist groups that have split off of the LDS church. Combine that with an extreme case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, a patriarchal worldview, and a violent upbringing, and BAM - you get the Lafferty brothers. And obviously there are plenty of modern-day Mormons, even many narcissists, who don't commit murder or go to the extreme that Ron & Dan Lafferty did. I do think that people sometimes do bad things under the guise of religion, but I don't think that religion, on the whole, causes people to do bad things. And I think it's beneficial that this cautionary tale has been put out there, to remind us of the pitfalls of fanatical religious fervor. I still think that, on the whole, religion helps good people be better people, and I understand how people might disagree with me. But I thought Krakauer did a pretty decent job, despite his biases (that he partially lays out in his Author's Remarks at the end of the book) of making it clear that the Lafferty brothers were the exception, not the rule, to Mormonism (and, to a lesser degree, the exception to Mormon Fundamentalism as well).

abdel1985
Abdel Benaz abdel1985 — I saw this book got a really good review in the Washington Post, and it's hard to be objective because sometimes they are good and sometimes not so much. BUT-this was right on point! It's a book translated from Swedish, so there's a lot of (let's say) complicated names. The protagonist is a former hypnotist. He has made a promise to several people to never hypnotize again after an incident occurred earlier in his career with not very good results. However, he has friends in the police force and they call him because they come across a gruesome murder scene where a family has been brutally murdered and there is one person alive...but barely. Because the person is in a coma, the police cannot interview him. One of the police remembers the hypnotist and thinks he can get something from the victim under hypnosis about what happened. Reluctantly, he gives in and decides to hypnotize him and opens up a world of trouble. From here, the action picks up at such a rapid pace, I couldn't put the book down. We find out why the hypnotist stopped his work, rather abruptly. We also discover there was another family member that wasn't killed and wasn't at the scene. We find out that the hypnotist has troubles at home-his son has a blood disease, his wife will never forgive him for an affair (he may or may not have had) and she exacts revenge. And that doesn't even begin to cover half of it. Normally I'm not a fan of murder mysteries but this should not be classified as such. It's a fast read, some of the chapters are short and descriptive-I actually felt I was there at the climax or walking around parts of the city with the characters. My only was the author(s) get so focused on the small triangle of the case that they leave some minor characters hanging BUT I turned the last page looking for more. I gave the book 4 stars because of this final flaw with the characters but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
