Michael Atehortúa maikphoto — I choose this as a group novel with my recovery reading class because 1) shortish chapters 2) offers some informational text, along with the narrative 3) I could get a classroom set at the public library 4) I thought my class might be interested in the dog story It's working reasonably well for my classroom purposes, although it's not uniformly readable for my students. As a book for my personal tastes, it doesn't impress me much. The voice doesn't appeal to me--not terribly polished syntactically, and too often self-aware. (Not a big fan!) My kids are not totally compelled by it, either, but again, it does provide varied learning opportunities for applying reading strategies. And, I could use it for free. As far as dog stories, I much preferred The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein.

Youri Lam primitivesense — I dusted this one off a week ago, I knew I'd read it (3rd grade?) and knew that it did something for me, but I couldn't remember what it was about or why it seemed to be calling attention to itself from the dusty shelf in the attic I was scanning. well, I read it, and, well, there's a reason it's a classic... it's a lovely love story, a thriller, and a horizon expander all rolled into one. (and a light escape from an april blizzard for us fancy-free adult-children)

Shawn Sharpe shawnsharpe — Our 21st century Kennedy assassination, with the added horror that thousands died instead of just one. The most amazing thing about the history of 9/11 as we know it today is that the terrorists were not using box cutters. They were using real guns and knives, because that's how easy it was to smuggle super-dangerous things onto planes at that time. The whole box cutter thing was a PR cover-up by the airlines. Rough reading, but pretty hard to be an American without it.

Zak Normandin zaknormandin — Wow. I read this book in one evening. I haven't done that in quite some time. I really, really enjoyed it. The first chapter was a bit of a drag, but after that I was hooked. It's about this boy, Alex, whose mother is dying of cancer, so he gets sent to live with his reporter/adventurer grandmother. She takes him along on a trip to the Amazon in search of a mythical Beast. Alex discovers that, far from just tagging along, he has a definite part to play in saving the People of the Mist, the last Indian tribe to remain untouched by civilisation. I loved it, it was awesome. I'll definitely be getting my hands on the sequels.
