Paolo Cecchetto ilgeniodel4f9f — This series (a trilogy beginning with The Amulet of Samarkand) was just meant to be an HP rebound for me, but I ended up really caring about it. Like the Great Rowling, Stroud's really good at making serious ethical questions exciting by giving them a magical spin; but where Harry is a sympathetic character that has greatness thrust upon him, Nathaniel is a total douche most of the time. It'd be like HP following Draco Malfoy's moral development. Also, in many ways this series is a bit more sophisticated than HP. It's got a lot of that dry British sarcasm going on and the alternative London Stroud imagines is way more unsettling than Rowling's. Imagine a world that's 98% Slytherin and you'll get the idea. I'm not saying this is better than HP. I'll admit there were times when I thought about putting it down and just rereading Order of the Phoenix, but I'm really glad I finished it. It was worth it.

Himinn Oo himinn — So far this is a really great book for people our age and younger. It shows the way that most people predict that school will be like. Although, at my school, we didn't have anyone like Nicholas.

吴 祖龙 wlsmen22c2 — Oh dear. I have stayed away from the second Ender series simply because I didn't like any of the later installment of the first (e.g. Xenocide. This, however, is not more of the same stuff. Rather, it is coming back to almost the quality of Ender's Game (although without the suspense.) It tells the same back story within the same basic time-frame, but from Bean's point of view. And it makes for a different story: not only does Bean have a very different background (Ender was a middle-class American boy, Bean grows up (well, he is four when he is moved away) on the streets of Rotterdam), but he is also far more intelligent. Bean outwits everyone. V. exciting to see what he will do next: this wasn't as fast a read as Ender's Game, but I did finish it in about a day. The only thing I mind is an attempt at a happy ending, as it seems to blatant to me that none of these children can never have a happy ending.
