Alejandro Gallego alejandrogallego — First of all, it cracks me up that the majority of the reviews on Goodreads don't like this book because the main character is unhappy in 'a job a million girls would kill for.' The whole point of the book is that 'opportunity' is not a necessarily a great thing if it means putting the rest of your life to the side, and sometimes it's better to let the 'opportunity' go by. I'd been wanting to read this because I really enjoyed the movie and I had heard good things about it. Parts of it were, in fact, good. Story: I liked the general story - about a girl who finds herself working for a terrible human being and trying to weather it for a year, which is all she has to put up with before all of these doors are supposed to open for her. In the mean time, her life outside her job continues happening, but pretty much without her in it. Characters: I liked Andy at the beginning, I liked some of the supporting characters (not in the 'I want to know this person' kind of way, but in the 'I think they're pretty well characterized' kind of way), but some characters were just plain stereotypes, which was a bit annoying (like the loud, boisterous gay guy who always talks in ALL CAPS). Miranda herself was not as good of a character as in the movie - in fact, she's hardly a character at all, just an incarnation of selfishness - and Andy's boyfriend is a total jerk. Andy herself does get hard to relate to, but not because of her hating her job. I found it hard to relate to someone who would WALK AWAY FROM THEIR BEST FRIEND IN A COMPLETE CRISIS just for work, even though yes, I know that Miranda threw her into yet another impossible situation. I know that's kind of the point - that Andy gets to into her job - but for me, the crisis of conscience should have come earlier. The author felt that she had to drive the point home with a sledge hammer, I guess. Writing: the author could have used more editing. We find ourselves in the same situations again and again ("Christian is hot! But he's not my boyfriend! But he likes me! But he's not my boyfriend!") when really just once would have sufficed. Also, the writing is not great. It's not bad, it's just not great. I assume that the reason this book got such hype and glowing reviews is because that most books in this genre - and here I mean the headless skinny woman on the cover, or maybe just a pair of legs, which seems to signify chick-lit beach reads - really suck. I can't say for sure because this is the first of these books I've read. This book does not suck. But it's no great shakes, either. Overall, I preferred the movie.
