Raynner Alba _aynner17 — I received this book as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program, requesting it because the description made me assume it would be akin to a novelization of the kind of movie that features a rag-tag group of youngsters who come together to form a winning athletic team and learn life lessons along the way, with the added bonus of checking in on them 20 years later and finding out how they turned out. However, the book is filled with many digressions about the history of Seattle, cocaine and crack, hedge funds, gentrification, the Pentecostal religion, the criminal justice system, the Seattle school system, and modern masculinity. While it's very informative to his story, and helps to round out the situations faced by himself and his teammates, these portions can seem sort of dry and irrelevant. The story shines when he relates the actual experiences of himself and his other subjects within this framework, and you can't help but wish he'd included more of these and less of the historical stuff. In each chapter, after Merlino has laid out the topic to be commented on, he includes a paragraph or two about how one or more of the guys dealt with the situation. Throughout, I found it difficult to keep track of which guys were which and how they had commented on an earlier topic, especially JT and Damien, as they were the most similar. A few more photographs would have been welcome, too. All in all, though, if you approach the book as more of a sociological study of race relations in Seattle, with an emphasis on how they affect a specific group of individuals, you can certainly see that it delivers. For a debut author, who is extremely close to his subjects, the result is largely a success.

gloriinperez
Gloria Pérez gloriinperez — This is a really well written modern day faerie story. Set in Germany, Christine and her Boyfriend Jude who is on an art fellowship think they have a fairly normal happy life. Living in Germany many unhappy memories are reappearing for Christine who spent some of her childhood here until her friend was kidnapped. After an accident Christine ends up seeing her childhood friend but in a strange dreamlike place - faeryland. It turns out Little May wasn't exactly kidnapped but went to live in faeryland and become Queen. The two worlds were currently in line with eachother so Mayfridh decides to spend some time in the Real world making friends and before you know it chaos follows. This is actually quite dark in places so not quite the happy beautiful tale that I would have expected and I think that is because it is mainly set in the Real World rather than Faeryland where everything is meant to be peaceful. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Mark Ellis markellisdesigns — It was nice to visit Precious Ramotswe & Botswana again for a gentle, easy read. The plots of these books are not why I enjoy them- they are beside the point for me. It's the effortless writing, the amusing characters, and the return to a slower pace of life where friendship and courtesy mix with down-home wisdom, values, and wit... We all would do well to approach life as Mma. Ramotswe does, with optimism and a spirit that allows her to appreciate her blessings and the simple pleasures of life...

Robert Brankiewicz _obert_rankiewicz — I loved this book! Tina Fey is smart and so funny. I think she's a little paranoid about feminism, but other than that I just really enjoyed reading her book.

Hans-peter Burkart hanspeterburkart — What I Can Tell You: This is one of the most interesting books I have read on protecting my family from the every day products I use in my home and on our bodies. I was shocked at how many toxins we have in our house. Once you get educated, it is easy to see why these items are a danger to you and your family. We are all scent based and if something smells good, it is good for us. This is far from the truth. I remembered while reading this book that a friend of mine while taking clothes out of the dryer after as wash commented on how nice her clothes smelled. I wanted to call her and say, stop using products with scents. Our pores take in these toxins created by scientists in a lab. "The whiff of moutain spring comes from Scientists dressed in white lab coats and masks, sitting on stools mixing compounds until they reproduce natural smells through the use of chemicals." It was also an eye opener to read the section on pest control. The cartoon shows a guy wearing a protective suit armed with an oxygen tank and a spray can standing over two unprotected kids. The words under it are: "I think I saw a fly." In the summer, I spray the gazebo like crazy to keep the flying nats and mosquitoes out. It is time to read the labels or like for some pyretha (thanks Vexcon). There is so much to discuss here. Like did you know that OJ after a few weeks loses Vitamin C? Or that Milk is acid producing which means it cancels out calcium intake. I could go on and on. This is one of those books that you will want to highlight, dog ear and discuss with your friends and family for years to come.
