Junieth Quintanilla _unieth — I have mixed emotions toward this book, although this memoir is fundamental toward understanding the veiled world of the Arabian harem in the 19th century, the author's evasiveness was truly exasperating. I ended up learning more about her from reading various journals and articles than this book. She seems to only want to describe her early childhood and adolescent in Zanzibar; life in the harem, domestic habits, fashion and food dominate most of the book. The story of her abandonment of her traditional way of life, her elopement from Zanzibar and life in Europe occupy a measly 28 pages out of the 227 pages in this book. It was definitely an interesting read that drove me as a reader to want to discover more about her.

Ashish Nade ashishdilipnade — While number 14 in the series, this is actually the second Eve Duncan book I've tried - both audio-books. I have to say that I enjoyed this one a bit more than Quicksand, but I think it had more to do with my expectations, than with the book itself. The narrator (same on both) didn't bother me as much this time around because I was used to her. And I had a better idea of what to expect from the characters. As with Quicksand, I have to say that these books are lacking a bit when it comes to the science. Maybe the earlier books focus on it more, but very little is said about what Eve Duncan actually does for a living (a forensic sculptor?). And while Joe Quinn "follows the clues", I'm never really surprised by his ingenuity, or deductive skills. Maybe all those CSI shows on TV have me expecting more? In this book, I actually found the "guest characters" more interesting than the usual players. The bad guy is certainly creepy, but his belief that he can truly be some kind of vampire is interesting. And Seth Caleb, a ally of sorts in search of the bad guy, is a very intriguing addition to the cast. While not a favorite series, I did get some enjoyment from this book.

Shanna Kitching shannakitching — I love Al Franken. I don't know how many ways I can say it. Sure, he's kind of a bully (but not a Big Splotchy Bully like some people), and his behavior at Bob Jones University was sort of out-of-line... but oh, the laughs that I had! Try it in audio as well.
