Christophe Kerebel christophekerebel — I still have not yet exhausted my desire to read the most popular of Georgette Heyer’s novels…this time reading Sylvester which has become my new favourite. Sylvester is the Duke of Salford and at the age of 28 has decided it is time to marry, but of course only to a suitable girl who meets all his particular requirements. His mother concerned for his happiness secretly prefers him to marry for love to keep in check his sense of consequence and deep reserve, and suggests he consider the granddaughter of a very good friend, Phoebe Marlow. Phoebe being neither beautiful nor elegant and quite lacking in confidence had perceived a cut from the Duke on a much earlier occasion and formed an instant dislike of the Duke’s arrogance. So much so that she used him as the model for the villain in her first published novel…the dastardly Count Ugolino. Both Sylvester’s and Phoebe’s relatives muddle in the affair and further complicating things Phoebe’s novel becomes a success…from here follows a rollicking tale of misunderstandings and missteps. Sylvester reminded me at times of Pride and Prejudice. Although the setting and exact nature of the grievances are not the same, what is similar are the bumbling of the hero and the lack of tact from the heroine. Miscommunication leads the characters to make assumptions about one another and because of the violence of their emotions efforts at reconciliation often have even more disastrous results. The Duke’s arrogance and self-consequence create misunderstandings with Phoebe and Phoebe has made assumptions about the Duke’s unfeeling character because of his treatment of those beneath his consequence. Sylvester has much in common with Heyer’s other Regency stories; humor, witty dialogue, fast-paced plot and great characters…but what makes this story distinctive from the others are the incredibly interesting complex characters. The toplofty Duke who must be taken down a peg or two, the talented guileless ingénue who is always getting into scrapes, the mischief-making nephew, the meddlesome cranky grandmamma and the foppish dandy obsessed with his boot tassels! I loved every bit of the story and hated to finish it. http://myobsessionwithbooks.blogspot....

Julian Sena _ulds — Small but info-packed. I think this could be really useful if there were more illustrations and had more troubleshooting info.

dgjung
Daegua Jeong dgjung — Originally read in 2002, this novel always stayed with me, but didn't pack quite as much an emotional wallop then as it did now. The music and novels selected are incredible, and the character development for these people is extraordinary for a book on teenagers. I was so frustrated with Charlie throughout because he would cry all the time and he felt so...stunted. I questioned his placement on the autism spectrum. Then I read the last ten pages of the book. It's a punch to the throat - and I mean that in the best way possible. It's not a twist like The Emperor's Children, which I still contend is terrible. This novel is heartfelt and painful and endearing, just like high school. I honestly hope the film can do it justice.

_olinde
Jolinde Nijland _olinde — A year or so ago I stumbled across this fantastic series (pun intended). Often termed urban fantasy romance or just romance, The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning is one of the most complicated science fiction universes that I have ever read. Which is saying ... something, as I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy series. (*spoiler alert*- I talk about the entire series in some detail but not the important things from Shadowfever) The series begins when MacKayla finds out her sister dies while doing a semester abroad in Ireland. The entire five books describe Mac's journey to discover who killed her sister and why. What enthralled me from the beginning was Moning's ability to bring this blond southern belle character from a sun shine sun tanner to a conniving grungy fighter who destroys shades in the shadows surrounded by the husks of dead humans who now look like pieces of paper. Moning explained how the series came to her in a dream, that she had no control over the story line and was just putting pen to paper. I was fascinated by this, as I am by all things dream related. Finally the day came when I could read the latest installment, Shadowfever. What a ride this story has been. Full of twists and turns that I did not see coming. It is also full of Mac's musings, one paragraph caught my eye. "The real thinkers of the world aren't the best dressed. Staying on top of the latest fashions, accessorizing, and presenting oneself is time consuming. It takes a lot of effort, energy, and concentration to be incessantly happy and perfectly groomed. You meet somebody like that- ask yourself what they're running from." In this series we have learned what Mac is running from, but in Shadowfever we learn what Barrons is running from, what secrets the fae keep, what Dani is hiding. It all comes together in a great swoop of previously tugged story lines and Moning twist them together in an unbelievably awesome tapestry of love, friendship, fight, horror, and triumph to make finish this fabulous story.
